Fret Saw

About This Item

Our Fret Slotting Saw has a rigid brass spine, and a comfortable traditionally-turned hardwood handle with ferrule. It looks right at home on a luthier's workbench.

Sheffield steel blade.
Make no mistake: this is NOT a standard hardware megamart backsaw! We started with a blade of legendary corrosion-resistant Sheffield steel, and specified .023" width to match our fretwire. We insisted on precision pull-cut teeth, to greatly reduce blade flex and jamming in harder fingerboard woods. Lastly, we designed an easy to use, removable clear acrylic depth stop. It slides up or down, with thumbscrews to precisely set any fret slot depth.

And one more thing: this saw works seamlessly with our Fret Slotting Miter Box.

The acrylic Depth Stop can be adjusted to expose as much as 1/4" of the blade, and is removable for cutting off the ends of a blank fingerboard.

Overall length 15-1/4" (387.35mm)
Cutting length 10" (254mm)
Blade depth 1-3/4" (44.45mm)

Cut accurate 90-degree slots when you use the saw with our Fret Slotting Miter Box. Add a Fret Scale Template and you'll never miscalculate your fret positions.

I have a fret cutting jig and I got this to assist me in re-cutting fret slots after having taken down my fingerboards (flamenco) on the bass side of things. Looks like it's going to the job just fine. My saw is from another well known luthier supply company and it fits my saw perfectly.

Fret saw

I have used this saw for some time now and it does the job very well for those who don't have access to a circular saw like me. I am lucky enough to have a local engineer who can make fret templates for odd and unusual scale lengths. Stew Mac supply quite a range of sizes that will cover a large array of scale sizes that will suit most. I have seen a complaint in the comments about the depth stop being unusable. However if that commenter flips the depth stop over 180° it WILL accomodate any fret wire depth. I can fully recommend this saw.

Wonderful fret saw.

I have my own fretting jig and this saw is wonderful for cutting the slots. With the stop on the top of the blade you can't cut to deep of a slot. Great addition to my shop. Sure beats my old worn out saw. Thank you StewMac.

Radius Blocks for Added Functionality

By

One trick I use is to use a short radius block as a fence. Hold it tight against the fretboard and the body of the saw while cutting, and you'll guarantee perfectly straight cuts.

Cleaning up slots before re-fretting on unbound fingerboards, or prepping slots for fretless bass, it's perfect.

I like to cut the slots deeper for fretless bass conversions, so the plastic binding I fill the slots with is visible about halfway down the side of the fingerboard. With the radius block and this saw with the stop, that goes quickly. On regular re-frets, it makes slot prep fast and easy on unbound fingerboards. If I have to level a board significantly, to where the slot depth is affected, this saw is my go-to, and makes quick work of the job.

Very comfortable grip and beautiful construction as well.

Perfect for accurate fret slots!

I've had this fret saw for over a decade, and it still works like a charm! Combined with the Depth Stop, you can cut fret slots to the perfect width & depth cleanly! This is one of many Stew Mac tools we provide for all of our students at the Guitar Services Workshop.
