Teflon Fret Dam

About This Item

For cleaner refret jobs!
Pulling old frets can chip a fretboard: keep the slots clean and glue-free for repairs.

It's hard to avoid a few fingerboard chips when pulling out old frets. A piece of this .020" non-stick Teflon® in the fret slot will help keep your epoxy or super glue out of the slot as you replace or fill the chips. It pulls out easily after the glue is dry. You'll do a cleaner job, save work, and make refretting easier. The .020" x 6" x 6" (.508mm x 152.4mm x 152.4mm) sheet can be trimmed with scissors to the re-usable sizes you need.

A word from Grit Laskin, the King of Inlay:
"My inlay work frequently necessitates large cavities shockingly near to fret slots. In the past, I had no choice but to let epoxy spill over into the slot, requiring me to melt it out, afterward, with a heated saw tip. Then, along came my new best friend, StewMac's Fret Dam. This saves me so much work and completely eliminates the potential for accidental damage of the fret slots, the inlay or the fretboard binding. Now, I won't do a single inlay project without it!"

Worked Great

Used the fret dam material to fill my fret slots before installing fretboard binding. Worked great and easy to install. Saves so much time from needing to clear slots out later. Glad I bought more than I needed becuase I can see myself using it a lot in the future.

Good spacer for future purfling

By

I needed a .040” spacer to hold a slot for purfling. I noted that the teflon dam was .020” thick. It comes in a 6x6” sheet. I cut a few strips with a paper cutter, doubled them, and held the space when I glued on the binding. When the glued dried, it came out with a gentle tug. It worked perfectly.

I'd buy again, but.........

Like another reviewer, I had a terrible time with static build-up on the dams when inserted in the fret slots. Most of the sawdust I was trying to patch with ended up stuck all over the Teflon dam. They worked a little better if I dropped them in a cup of water first and then dried them off. Humidity in my shop is about 55%, and I don't seem to have other static issues. Something with a little carbon filler in it might be better or even Teflon coated metal pieces. I'm not saying they didn't work for me....they did. They kept the filler out of the slots, but required several attempts to fill even minor spots.

Anytime you don't want superglue to stick

I've used it to repair chipped out fret slots, but also comes in handy anytime you don't want superglue to stick to something. Might last forever, as you can wipe/scrape it off and use it over and over again.
