Tried & True Original Wood Finish

About This Item

Simple, environmentally friendly
An easy to apply oil finish that protects the wood and keeps it clean. The smooth satin result is perfect for players that don't want the feel of a finish on their necks.

No solvents, no VOC's and nature made
Tried & True uses 18th century techniques and all-natural linseed oil and beeswax to make this environmentally safe finish. It has low odor, so it doesn’t stink up your shop.

A little bottle that goes a long way
Unlike traditional finishes, a thicker viscosity keeps this finish from being messy and running during application. Thin coats are the key to good results. Additional coats give the look more depth, and it can be used over wood that has already been stained.

Apply a thin coat with a lint-free cloth and allow to penetrate for 1 hour. Work the finish into the wood until the surface is dry to the touch. Let cure for at least 24 hours and burnish with a soft cloth or steel wool.

2-ounce bottle.

Great product, but do your research!

I've been using Tried and True to finish a guitar and made a million mistakes even though I THOUGHT I did my research. The only way you learn is by making mistakes, so I'll share my experience.
1.) Using a sponge to apply works best for me. I tried using cotton cloth, but that leaves all sorts of lint behind no matter what I did.
2.) Thin coats, like real thin coats are the key. The thinnest coverage you can get is the way to go.
3.) Buff it with a lint free cloth a day after you apply a coat. Lots of people say to use 000 steel wool, but until I had a good built up coat, all steel wool did was leave bits of steel all over.
4.) Use the sun! I live in the PNW and when it's raining, it took a week or more for each coat to dry. It got better as I used thinner and thinner coats, but now that we have sun and I've been hanging the guitar body on the back porch, coats dry enough to reapply in about a day.
5.) Wet sanding with 600 grit was too aggressive between finish coats. I ended up switching to 1200 and although it takes more work, I haven't sanded through the finish since.

Overall, I love this product, it produces a lovely finish and if you coat and buff and wet sand it gets dang close to a gloss finish. Just remember to bring your patience along for the ride.

Use it on Everything

Want beautiful wood? This is perfect.
Want an idiot-proof, simple finish? This is perfect.
Want something that *feels* beautiful to the touch? This is perfect.

My process is a little different: I follow the instructions as they are on the bottle *except* I do at least 5 coats (instead of 30, and I DON'T burnish for the first three coats, and then I burnish with 400 grit sandpaper before the final 2 coats. This lets the wood drink it all up and builds a nice base up.

The look is on the matte end of things, but it has this gorgeous old-world sheen. Finish it with your favorite wax.

Wasn't sure about this but the results are fantastic! Easy to apply, and a 2 oz bottle will last a very long time.

Easy to apply

The tried and true oil is one of the easiest to apply finishes I have ever used. It's as simple as, apply, let it dry and rub. The end result is a feeling like there is no finish at all and a nice dark beautiful matt finish.

Almost Exacly What I Wanted

My first project and it looks great. Put three coats on a solid Swamp Ash body and turned it yellow, exactly what I wanted. I can't get it to shine nor can I get it to stop feeling oily though. Once I figure out how to get the oily feeling out, I'm doing this for everything. Love that it is all natural.

A great finish -- subtle and soft -- for my diy defretting of my seven-string bass.

I have several necks I bought used that I want raw(no nitro) so I'm using true original and so far I like it! Easy to apply, and use!

All the classic perfectly mixed in a small, conveniant bottle. One may have a small box with Tripoli earth to have a complete polishing set available.
