Malaysian Blackwood, Diospyros ebonasea
- Back halves: 8-1/4" x 22" x 0.155" (210mm x 559mm x 3.9mm)
- Sides: 5" x 31-1/2" x 0.130" (127mm x 800mm x 3.3mm)
Malaysian Blackwood is a member of the ebony family, but unlike other ebonies, it has extremely beautiful color variations that range from blacks, browns, greys and greens with striking sandy colored sap wood. Visually each set is unique and complex variegation is common in these sets.
Malaysian Blackwood is heavy and can be brittle across the grain so care should be taken to prevent cracking. It bends relatively easily and machines very cleanly with conventional methods. We also recommend using epoxy vs. hide glue or traditional wood glues to join the back plate.
Tonally Malaysian Blackwood really shines. This species produces a warm, rich sonic profile that has a lot of favorable similarities to rosewoods with the added benefit of extremely clear, shimmering mids and highs.
In short: Malaysian Blackwood is visually stunning with a tonal profile that is rich complex, and full of overtones with wonderfully crisp mids and highs.
