Build an instrument you can play today!
If you are new to uke but play guitar, you can play a baritone uke right away! Because it's tuned the same as the top 4 strings of your guitar—D, G, B, E, you already know how to play it. You'll be rocking on this little guy as soon as you've strung it up. And it makes a great first instrument for a child or new player.

Pure enjoyment

By

This kit was a lot of fun to assemble. I'm not done yet, but I've had a great time working on it. The quality of the materials is top-notch. The instructions book, for the most part, is great. There are a few departures I took, like the sequence of fitting the neck and placing the bridge. But all in all, this deserves five stars.

I bought and built this Ukelele for my Daughter's 40th Birthday. Building this kit was enjoyable and the end result is an impressive instrument.

Baritone Ukulele

By

I purchased this kit to gain experience building an acoustic instrument. My son bought me a dreadnought kit a few years ago and I was afraid to do it before I completed that wasn't as involved. This kit filled the bill.

The StewMac instructions videos were great. The finished instrument looks as good as my mahogany GS Mini and sounds great. I switched to D'Addario Baritone Titanium strings. I've repaired a number of acoustic instruments but I never built one.

I may add an LR Baggs or similar pickup so I can play it through my amp.

I feel that the experience I gained will be invaluable as I build my dreadnought kit.

Impossible to make anything foolproof

By

This was a very fun project and the written and video instructions are excellent. That said...the old adage applies here: "It's impossible to make anything foolproof because fools are so ingenious".

The finished ukulele looks really good (if you don't know what to look for). I made two significant mistakes. One I know exactly what I did, the other I have no idea how I did it.

The mistake I know I made was not measuring the fret heights before gluing in the frets. They were all over the place and required a lot of grinding down. It was pretty much impossible to round them off nicely after that, at least with the tools I have.

The other mistake that I don't know how I made it was discovered when I ran a straight edge down the fret board to check the height of the bridge. They are supposed to be level with each other and in my case the bridge was very high. It was much too high to explain by the amount of fret grinding I did. The neck fits quite nicely to the body, so it isn't obviously misaligned either.

The instructions tell you to check it, but they don't say anything about how to correct it. I wound up shaving down the part of the bridge where the saddle sits, but I couldn't go down too far or there wouldn't be enough support for the saddle. I also had to sand down the nut and saddle a lot to get the action to a reasonable height, but it is still a bit high.

Anyway, I'm still quite pleased with the results. Not being any kind of musician, I can't provide an informed opinion about how it sounds, but it sounds okay to me. This project left me with a lot of respect for professional luthiers.

Excellent ukulele kits!!

This is the fourth concert size and first tenor size ukuleles that I’ve purchased. These kits are so much fun to build and are a great starting point for anyone wanting to learn how to build acoustic instruments! The instructions are very clear and easy to follow, especially if you watch the videos as well. I highly recommend these to anyone in who is interested in learning how to make their own ukulele.

Baritone uke, great kits and fun project.

By

I bought 3 baritone ukelele kits one each for my daughter and 2 granddaughters. The baritone is a great starter because the tuning is the same as a guitar making the transition easier. I have the first one nearly complete with no issues. I did discard the bridge plate because it didn't match the angle of the X bracing and the tail block because it was plywood. Both items would be fine but, I have a good wood shop and making new parts was easy. Still, great kits that go together easily with great instructions and nice wood. I have never been disappointed with any purchase from Stewmac.com.

A star very good build quality just take ya time and be soft on filling the back as its laminate and can chip easy. But well happy with the build. Just struggling with the setup but will persist highly recommended

What an adventure!

I don’t know what I was thinking when I purchase this kit for my daughter (age 9) and myself as we limped through Covid-19 quarantine; it has been amazing. Really a wonderful and digestible intro into fine woodworking. It has opened me up to so many new possibilities and it’s only half way done! Truly a great project! It sounds silly, but this little project teaches patience - what a great jumping off point to learn about wood, glue, instruments... You name it!!! Super excited to see what comes next. I am trying to get my daughter excited about one of the electric instruments next!
