Straight from the personal stash of Irving Sloane
Don't miss this rare opportunity! We worked with Roger Sadowsky and the Sloane family to bring you these amazing Port Orford Cedar (Chamaecyparis lawsoniana) tops hand-selected by pioneering luthier Irving Sloane.
Here's the story: while Sloane was traveling in the 1950s, like a true luthier, he was collecting tonewoods along the way. Since Port Orford Cedar has always been limited in supply, he jumped at the chance to purchase these tops. He carefully stored the wood in his workshop, planning to create some of his highly influential guitars with them. Like many luthiers, Sloane's wood collection grew quite large and these tops were never used.
Seasoned to perfection
Renowned luthier Roger Sadowsky became the caretaker to this wood when he became Sloane's son-in-law. These beautiful tops have been carefully stored for decades, and now is your chance to own a piece of history. They've been able to age gracefully and are ready for you to craft your own masterpiece.
Port Orford Cedar is native to the northern California and Oregon coasts, and is prized for its beauty and easy workability. Considered one of the finest woods for flamenco guitars, it has one of the best strength to weight ratios across the wood spectrum. It has an extremely responsive and bold sound that's rich in fundamentals. These tops have an incredibly tight grain and very uniform coloring.
They are sized for OM and other smaller body instruments such as ukuleles.
