StewMac Neck Shims for Guitar

About This Item

Tapered maple shims used to change the angle of a bolt-on neck.

To change the angle of a bolt-on neck, players and repair shops have used shims for years. We've seen everything from matchbook covers to guitar picks stuck in neck joints.

Those kinds of shims create an unwanted gap under the heel of the neck: a dead air space where humidity condenses to swell the wood. As Dan Erlewine describes in his Guitar Player Repair Guide: "This gap may cause an upward kink in the neck. And many players feel they lose tone unless firm contact is maintained between the neck and the body."

Dan creates tapered shims that cover the entire heel of the neck—with these ready-made shims, that work is done for you. Attention, repair shops: making a quality shim takes time! Keep these on hand for a quick turnaround on this common repair.

"My Jazzmaster needed a better string break angle over the bridge. The 0.5-degree shim let me raise the bridge to the height I needed. And it fit the neck pocket perfectly."
—Erick Coleman, guitar repairman and StewMac tech advisor

Full contact and precisely tapered: we have 3 different degrees for changing the pitch of any bolt-on neck.
  • 0.25-degree shim offers the most versatility. Stacking them will let you really dial in the neck angle you're after.
  • 0.5-degree shim is the one you'll reach for most often. It works great on Fender and many other solidbodies.
  • 1-degree shim is great for guitars with a Tune-o-matic bridge or Floyd Rose.

Taper specs (approximate)
0.25-degree shim tapers from 0.030" to 0.019" (0.76mm to 0.48mm)
0.5-degree shim tapers from 0.028" to 0.008" (0.71mm to 0.20mm)
1-degree shim tapers from 0.060" to 0.010" (1.52mm to 0.25mm)

Dimensions
Shaped: 2-3/16" x 3" (55.56mm x 76.12mm)
Blank: 2-1/4" x 3" (57.15mm x 76.12mm)

Shaped shims fit most neck pockets with a rounded heel. You can trim along the lasered line to fit the shim to a pocket with a flat heel, like a Tele.

Blank shims were designed for odd screw spacings, smaller neck pockets, and custom designs like the Fender Micro-Tilt™.

The Shop Set of 12 includes one each of every size, shape and taper:
3 shaped shims for guitar
3 shaped for bass
3 blank shims for guitar
3 blank shims for bass

Made of solid maple to match the guitar neck.

My guitars play better with a neck shim. The improvement is enormous. Truss rod adjustment alone is not enough.

Perfect Shim for EVH Wolfgang USA

By

Verified Buyer

I wanted low action on my EVH Wolfgang USA, but couldn't get max use out of my tremolo arm due to the pivot screws being all the way down. The bridge tilted into the body. The .25 degree blank shim did the trick and solved my problem by getting my action low and keeping my Floyd Rose parallel to the body. I couldn't be more happier. I've seen individuals on online forums cry and complain about how expensive these shims are. Don't listen to them as it is well worth $10 for a full pocket shim that will not end up costing you hundreds of dollars in repairs if you use a bad homemade one instead. If you have an EVH Wolfgang, get the blank .25 degree shim. All I had to do was make a few cuts to the shim to have it fit in the neck pocket. To get the corners of the shim to fit, all I did was gently sand the corners until they were round enough to fit perfectly. To make the holes, all I did was use a hole puncher. It took me 30 mins. Be careful, these shims are very thin and can break easily so work with care. My Wolfgang sounds great and plays great! Thank you StewMac! And long live the king EVH! It's 5150 time!

Review of Neck Shims and Mighty Mite Strat Neck

By

Verified Buyer

I purchased a Mighty Mite Strat replacement neck, shims, and set-up gauges from Stew-Mac. All items came promptly and usually before the estimated arrival date at purchase. The Mighty Mite neck is great! No fret sprout and smooth as silk. I used the shims and they worked perfectly. The videos on StewMac website are extremely helpful. I had only changed my guitar strings on my guitars up till now. All the tools and guages are of excellent quality and worth the money. I do not usually write a review for anything. I will continue to use Stewmac.

Ordered a .5 Degree version for a G&L Fallout Tribute Guitar. Fit without any modifications needed and I was finally able to adjust the bridge action to my liking.

10/10 would purchase again if i ever need another neck shim
