Make it play like a dream
Wilkinson was inspired by the iconic Teles of the 50s when speccing this kit. Full of vintage vibe and tone, the parts and electronics have been upgraded from top to bottom.

The heart of the kit is the premium grain-matched center joined 2-piece body. The routing is crisp and clean, and the wood is smooth and ready to finish. With our series of ColorTone Lacquers and Finishes, you can make it look exactly like you've always pictured it.

The Maple neck right out of the box feels smooth and fits tight in the pocket. It's pre-fretted, inlayed, and ready of fine tune to your perfect shape. The profile of the full but comfortable neck is amazingly close to the guitars that rolled out of southern California in 1952. The peghead has a very familiar shape—it's ready for you to customize and dial in the exact curves and contours to match any vintage model you feel inspired by.

Custom pickups and pro parts
Each and every electronic component is totally upgraded. Wilkinson's custom-wound WVTN and WVOB pickups are hooked up with premium wiring and professional-grade CTS pots and CRL switch. These vintage-voiced Alnico V pickups have captured the biting tone of 50s Teles perfectly. The switch and pots are completely pre-wired, saving you hours of work. And of course, the pickguard is lacquered black Bakelite, just like it should be.

Vintage hardware with modern playability
The hardware upgrades are where this kit really shines. The bridge is Wilkinson's take on the original Tele bridge, with traditional brass saddles. The saddles are staggered so your guitar will actually play in tune (try that with any original Tele!). Just like the originals, the bridge is steel which fundamentally changes how the pickups and the entire guitar sounds. The Graph Tech nut keeps the guitar in tune even with deep blues bends.

Your kit includes everything you'll need:
  • Finely sanded 2-piece center joined Alder body
  • Neck pocket, pickup cavities and bridge holes routed and drilled
  • Shaped Maple neck with installed truss rod
  • 25.5" (647mm) scale length, 7.25" radius

Good, solid kit

First guitar build - 52 tele kit. I am a woodworker so I was only concerned about the integrity of the kit - would it make a solid, smooth playing guitar. The neck that was shipped showed a slight back bow (could rock a straight edge back and forth over the 12th fret). Hard to determine if it was the neck itself or the frets, but it has settled to flat with string tension proper humidification / indoor acclimation and lightly fret filing on the suspect 12th and 13th frets (one way truss rod was fully relieved already, so it could not "fix" the back bow). Stew Mac sent a replacement neck quickly and with no hassle - I will probably send it back as the setup now is fine and I don't want to pull everything off again. Also, I spent 5 days finishing the neck / guitar, so I'd have to redo that as well.
All in all I can recommend this kit but I couldn't really say a true beginner could do it "easily". Also, the instructions might want to add the few steps that it ignores - like, finish the neck and body BEFORE you do anything with the kit. So maybe, check the neck straightness out of the box, etc. I spent hours watching YouTubes to make me feel comfortable with each step.
Last point, totally my lack of research - the 50's style bridge on telecasters is quite simplistic, hence not very easy to get the intonation right. Someone trying for the first time to make a guitar might opt for a more flexible bridge design (like the 60's kit available). It will make setup easier and likely produce a better sounding guitar with less effort and stress.
Other than that everything went great.

Great kit, to a point

Very easy to build with two exceptions, the holes in the peg head were to small for the furls to fit so I had to drill them out with a 23/64th bit and the tuning machines didn’t sit flat because the tongues on the under sides weren’t pressed down all the way so I had to flatten them with a pair of vice grips, but it all worked out good in the end
