great kit for first time builder

By

Very happy with how this came out. First time builder, no prior wood working or soldering experience. Came together pretty readily with a few hours work each day over a 3 day weekend and has been a blast to play and sounds great. I watched a few youtube videos on basic soldering and guitar finishing to supplement the instructions, but overall the instructions were really well laid out and seems geared toward the first time builder. There was a bit of discrepancy on the wiring provided compared to the instructions in the booklet, but after reviewing the circuit and watching a few youtube videos on T-style circuits it made sense. I feel like I understand a lot more about guitars now having gone thru the build process, and am a lot more apt to tinker with this build going forward than I would be with another guitar. If you've ever built a PC or similar, you'll do fine with this kit.

Would buy another

By

The kit came as described. The instructions are very clear. The bad things were that the kit I received needed flat sanded alot! But that was ok for me. The instructions are talking about a kit with a maple neck which could be confusing to some. There were cracks in the headstock and fret board that I didn't see until I was putting finish on, but I fixed it. The fret job is not good, but I was planning on refretting anyways.
Overall I will buy another one, but only if it's on sale. ??

truss rod shipped disconnected

By

Verified Buyer

guitar came together as planned. High quality body. Good, clear photo instructions. I knew I was going to want a pro set up. I couldn't get the truss rod straight. My luthier informed me that the truss rod was never connected to its receiving bolt. Nothing a pro couldn't fix, but it was frustrating for my first time building a guitar.
Also, I kinda wish it would have been routed for a future upgrade to humbucker size pick ups. That wouldn't cost any more, but would add upgrade potential

Great Project

I really enjoyed this project and cannot stop playing my new guitar. The instructions were simple and even though I had to learn about a few things regarding how to set up a guitar, it was well worth it.

Great Kit, great value, great experience!

This is a great kit to get you started. There is a very clear and well illustrated manual that comes with it. I’m half way through the build and enjoying every moment. If you are thinking about a great project to get you through the current crisis then this is perfect! The customer service from Stewmac is second to none. Highly recommended.

Good first build, but did requirement to spend a lot of time researching

By

This was my first guitar build, and I'm between 3-4 stars for a rating (bumped up to 4 because customer service is really good). I got the kit for my birthday in October (after tipping my wife off), and started building a few weeks later. All told it took about 5 weeks (with almost four weeks of that painting and curing time).

Overall I'm happy with the kit and the eventual guitar. You'll need a few more tools to build the guitar, so make sure you've done a little research about what you'll need before hand. I really didn't like the painting process, but maybe this is because I'm too much of a perfectionist. Overall, I'm still not 100% satisfied with the paint job I did (and I ended up with an entire extra can of clear lacquer, despite doing even more coats than was recommended), but at least it has "character" now. I'm not an audiophile, and had not played a Tele before, so I can't really comment on the final tone (although i do want to re-do the set up of the guitar).

There are a few things though that keep this from a perfect review:
1. The color. One of the two options provided for the paint kit is "blonde". I assumed that the "blonde" color was the darker yellow that is shown in the above picture (and on the box and in the instructions). After putting on my first few color coats though, the color was much, much lighter pale yellow. After a google search I discovered that older Tele's did have a very light yellow "blonde" color. But the pictures StewMac is using here are clearly not that color (they're more "butterscotch"). So don't expect the guitar to come out the color in these pictures!
2. The instructions overall were decent, but there were some discrepancies between the kit I received and the instructions, as well as discrepancies between the instructions and the instructions on the spray cans. I would have liked the instructions to be the same so I wouldn't second guess half the steps (esp. painting) that I was doing. The wiring descriptions were also not 100% accurate (no mention of the ground wire) and I only did it correctly by watching a few build videos on youtube.
4. You may get a slightly different kit than the picture. For instance, I received a dark wood fretboard (which apparently you don't have to lacquer) as opposed to the light wood in the picture (which does require lacquer and fret dressing).

I will say that customer service at StewMac is GREAT! The replied to emailed questions within 24 hours and even sent me a couple of replacement screws for free.

One minor note. The top of the neck does not have fret markings, so you might want to add some before you paint the neck.

good quality

This was my first DIY guitar kit and I loved the whole process. I would have liked more detailed directions for the soldering. The instruction book had a few vague pictures and the colors of the wires in my kit didn't match the book. I had to rely on online videos to make sure I did it correctly. Other than that, great buy.

Fun project, great end result

By

This build was a lot of fun. It was my first time building a guitar from a kit, so it was a big learning experience. Overall everything went well, except that the instructions for the wiring were inconsistent with the components (the two-strand wire with white insulation from the volume pot to the output jack was replaced by two wires, one yellow and one black). I submitted a tech support comment and received an email that I would receive a reply "typically" within 24 hours, but none has arrived and it's over 24 hours out now. No matter, I figured out the problem by studying the pictures in the manual to see what should go where. Also the pick guard had a blemish on it, and it scratches really easily, so I've ordered the bakelite replacement.

Excellent Quality and Ease to finish and assemble!

By

Verified Buyer

As I'm at an age where I was reluctant to spend what it would take to purchase a guitar like this off the shelf, this opportunity to assemble and finish this guitar came at a very opportune time. As I'm half of a duo that performs at Independent Living and Assisted Care Centers regularly, and have used only electric acoustic guitars for years, I'd always considered incorporating an electric guitar like this into our music. Upon receiving this kit, I immediately was very impressed with the manufacturing quality as well as the component quality. I was also very surprised at how little work was required to make the body and neck ready to apply the finish. The frets required minimum sanding mostly on the edges and are installed very accurately. It will take very little effort to align the neck. Probably the only remaining unknown for me at this time will be the quality of sound after the electronic components are installed, but that will only produce minimum challenges if there are any. I am currently applying the finish to the body and neck. I am very happy and very impressed with this product.
