StewMac Triple-O Acoustic Guitar Kit

About This Item

Torrefied tops now available!
Build a great sounding 000-size guitar from AAA-grade tonewoods. Start with the advantage of precision machining from our Ohio shop.

  • Carved mahogany neck
  • Accurately bent sides
  • Bookmatched back, joined and cut to shape
  • AAA spruce top with soundhole and rosette channel
  • Solid ebony fingerboard, bridge, and overlays

Designed with your success in mind
With the kit, you get a lot of help to make sure your guitar turns out great. The full-size blueprint is modeled after a prized vintage Martin, and shows exactly how every part fits. A sturdy cardboard body mold holds the guitar sides in the perfect contour as you build.

The instruction book is really a short course in guitarmaking, by luthiers Todd Sams and Dan Erlewine; no other kit has anything like it. Todd and Dan made the step-by-step DVD that's included with the kit, too. From start to finish, these guitarmakers guide you to a successful build.

You don't need a big shop
We've done the critical machining, so the neck joint and other parts fit well right from the start.

A slotted bone nut and shaped bone saddle are included, along with inlays, bindings and our two-way Hot Rod truss rod. (We know that tuning machines are something you'll prefer to choose for yourself.)

New torrefied spruce option
Choose a torrefied spruce top for the stability, tone and look of well-aged vintage wood. This high-temperature, low-oxygen kiln drying improves the wood, similar to decades of natural aging.

    Included in our kits:
  • Solid AAA tonewoods: Spruce, Indian Rosewood and Mahogany
  • Precisely machined neck joint at the 12-fret, dovetail or bolt-on
  • Bridge pins, end pin, frets, bindings, rosette and trim
  • Hot Rod two-way adjustable truss rod
  • Precut heavy cardboard molds for trouble-free body assembly
  • Full-size blueprint and bracing template
  • Illustrated 36-page spiral-bound instruction book
  • Step-by-step DVD: Building an Acoustic Guitar Kit

A Nice Kit

By

I built the Indian rosewood with torrified top. The back and sides are a really nice grade. The top has some grain issues that really make it a AA quality from an aesthetic sense but the acoustic quality is more like a AAAA. Braces were a little off 1/4 sawn so they didn't carve mas easily as I like. The neck appears to be African mahogany but is really light and kinda punky. Honduran mahogany blanks are getting harder to get so I get it. The overall quality of the parts, organization of the kit and instructions/plans are all nicely done.

I am trained as a luthier for 20 plus years and have built many guitars from raw lumber but after some major life changes I find myself with a much simpler and less capable shop so I chose a kit as a way to get around all the expense of setting up a full blown guitar shop again. I think this is a great value and is a good way for someone to get into building. Given some patience and a few tools this would be a great build for a first timer.

The ebony headstock plate came with one end at .060" and the other at .020" thick so it was unusable.

Definitely would have given 5 stars if the neck was denser/better wood and the headstock plate wasn't bad.

A fun build for sure!

Will be a fun project.

Haven't built a guitar since I went to lutherie school 20 some years ago. I've spent my time as a repair person. So I'm excited to go to work on this project this summer when my repair business tends to be slow. I like the 12 fret necks as i am a finger picker so I want to play this NOW . . . albeit, patience.

If you love guitars and want the joy of having a homemade instrument, you’ve got to give this a try! This is a great kit. Well packed and insulated. It might take you a while to make but there’s plenty of On-line help and support to get you through. Great fun and the chance to brag every time it comes out at all your family “ getogethers”

Triple-O kit

I have built several of the Stew Mac guitar kits--Love them all. I started with the dove tail neck kits, but switched to the bolt-on necks because they are much easier to align and I if the fretboard is not glued to the body, they can be removed later to fine tune the alignments. My favorite models are the Triple_O and OM acoustic kits.

Very impressed!

I was so pleased to receive this fantastic kit and was more than pleasantly surprised by the quality of the materials and by how thoughtfully the individual components had been chosen. The included DVD, plan and instructions give me confidence that I can make a decent job of building the guitar.
I should also mention that, despite opting for standard delivery, I received the kit here in the UK in around four days from ordering.
Fantastic!

I love this guitar!

I started building my rosewood back and sides with dovetail neck kit in 2011, made very rapid progress and then chickened out when it came time put a finish on it and set the neck and bridge. Then life got crazy and it sat unfinished for almost a decade. While working from home due to Covid, I finally found the time to get it done. Im so sorry that I had to wait 9 years to enjoy this guitar. I have a 1959 Martin 0-15 and a rosewood D-1R from the mid 90s and this 000 is more playable and more responsive than either of those instruments. It doesn't project as well but it sounds beautiful up close and you feel every note on your body through the rosewood back. I did make a couple mistakes setting the neck, mostly due to resuming this unfinished project 9 years later. I did not correct the neck to body angle enough, so the finger board falls away at the body a bit more that I would like and the bridge saddle has to be taller than I like, but the instrument is very playable with very light pressure, and it just sound alive, without any tension.

A couple of suggestions: Don't be afraid to make mistakes if you are learning, just work through them. It probably won't be perfect but it's still going to be great. Also if you are going to build more than one guitar in your life, maybe skip the barrel clamps and go straight to a "go bar" clamping system. I made my own go bar system later on, it wasn't very expensive. I also wish that I had considered the blot on neck at times but I was trying to be a purest when I ordered the dovetail.

Purchasing this kit was the start of a long personal journey from being a frustrated conformist workaholic, to someone who makes his craft and creativity a priority in his life. I'm glad I finally followed through with completing it.

Completed my first guitar

By

Was able to complete the first guitar. Overall a great experience. The instructions were very good for a non-woodworker. The finishing work was the most difficult and where I didn't do as well. Used grain filler but obviously not well enough - don't have the glass like finish except in a few spots.

Customer support was excellent and gave advice frequently and quickly. Starting a second one next week and hope I can do the finishing better.

I bought the Triple O kit with rosewood back and sides spruce top and dovetail neck. All I can say is that if you’ve been thinking about it; stop and do it! The kit is great, quality components and great support. Who can ask for more from a company. I would recommend buying a Ukulele kit doing that first as a confidence builder. I bought the tenor one. I used several YouTube sites like Stewmac, blues creek, and also LMI. All good resources. One thing Stewmac includes excellent instructions and a video but some parts of the Triple O differ from a dread check the nut width on the plans and confirm before cutting your fret board. Really enjoyed the build!
