StewMac Tape Op Delay Pedal Kit

About This Item

The warm sound of tape delay in a pedal
Now you can get the unmistakable sound of an analog tape delay with the reliability and flexibility of a digital circuit.

We love analog tape delays! The raw, warm, and unique sound compliments the tone of electric guitars so well. The only problem is that tapes wear out, and analog delays can be inconsistent and difficult to dial in to the perfect sound for you. We set out to take the things we loved about classic delays and create a circuit that would be easy to use and sound killer too.

Don't buy your next pedal—build it!
We worked hard and finally developed a delay that rivaled our favorite tape machines and priceless analog pedals. No cold, sterile repeats here—the dry signal path is all analog! With 30ms to 625ms of delay you can cover everything from rockabilly slapback to deep experimental soundscapes all in one great sounding package.

With knobs for time, repeats, mix, and tone it's easy to dial in subtle or more extreme delays. The tone knob gives you complete control over the sound—you'll never have to deal with the dark and muddy sounds that ruin other delay pedals.

It's more than just a schematic
We include everything you need to build your new pedal:

  • Top quality components from resistors to switch
  • Road-worthy rugged metal enclosure with all holes pre-drilled
  • Bare or powder coated white finish
  • 3PDT breakout board for low noise
  • Input, output, and power jacks rear mounted for easy cable routing
  • True bypass switch
  • Custom printed labels

Easy! Download your instructions
We've made these instructions ready to download now. You can zoom in on every solder joint and resistor value to make sure your build is perfect from start to finish. With these step-by-step instructions, full color illustrations, and complete wiring guide you'll build a pedal you'll enjoy for a lifetime. Be proud every time you step on the custom pedal that you built.

Make your pedal your way
It's never been easier to have an inspiring sounding and looking pedal. We include labels for all of the knobs for a professional look. Paint your own raw metal enclosure or choose a powder coated enclosure that is ready to put on your board now.

Great Pedal! AWESOME CUSTOMER SUPPORT!!!

By

I finished the pedal and it worked fine. But there was an annoying 'pop' when switched on or off. Tommy worked with me thru all the possible reasons. I sent pictures of the build, with Tommy's guidance checked a variety of resistors, couldn't find anything wrong. Tommy sent replacement switch, still no luck. As last stab he sent replacement for the last capacitor before the output. Guess what -- I had installed that capacitor reversed and we had both missed it. Installed it correctly and everything works great. Tommy stuck with me throughout the process -- 25 emails! It's a great kit but the thing that really rocks is StewMac customer service!! A personal thanks to Tommy S!!

Great pedal, great service.

After working on the Tape Op delay pedal for quite a while, I finally have it working. It was a bit of a challenge due to the amount of parts you have to fit onto a small board, but with the help of Tommy in service I have a great sounding pedal. Thanks very much for your help.

Tape Op Delay Pedal Kit

This was such a fun and challenging build. Components are very small, but other reviews, build videos, a magnifier and the StewMac PC Board Holder were all very helpful (can't imagine this build without the PC Board Holder). The pedal is perfect and sounds great. Attention to detail, patience and organization are all a must, but the final product is worth it. Consistent with most of the other reviews, directions are very clear, tone knob variance is very subtle and decals are a bit too large (as you can see, I cut the "StewMac" from bottom of the larger decal for fit). But, now I'm hooked. This is clearly a gateway build. By the way, the extent of my previous soldering experience involved repairing guitar cables and modifying guitar wiring (e.g., replacing the three way switches with four ways on my Teles). All in, with paint, it took several hours over three days, but I took my time.

The Tape Op Delay is probably the most advanced of Stew Mac's pedal kits. It features premium grade components throughout and the downloadable build instructions are easy to follow. The PC board in this kit is densely packed with components and it's critical they are installed in the right order and with careful building technique. I keep a Volt-Ohm meter handy to double check each of the resistors before mounting them to the board. I had one minor assembly issue with the 100pf capacitor in my kit which was too large for the available board space. I did a workaround by lengthening its leads and then double stacking it over a bank of nearby resistors. Problem solved! In the end, I was rewarded with a pedal that performed flawlessly from the first time I powered it up. The controls are very intuitive and the delays pristine and musical. I would recommend this pedal to anyone who has previously built a pedal or two and who is not afraid to wield a soldering pencil. This is a great pedal and well worth your time to build!

It works beautifully, but ...

I've got more than 5 decades as a working guitarist who maintains his own equipment and electronics, and have done kits starting when I was 14. The problems with this one was the inaccuracy of the instructions and illustrations. First, where it mentions how to install larger resistors, it would have been helpful to know that meant all but 1 of them. (22 out of 23) The capacitors being installed as polarized first, then non-polarized second should be reversed. The illustrations show different size/scale to board dimensions and component size than the reality. This results in at least one cap being darn near impossible to install due to no room between a resistor (part # 7369) and a large cap next to it. (parts # 7339 & 7326) The illustration provided shows the latter part as slim and roughly oval when it is, in reality, rectangular and larger, and does not fit properly. If the order mentioned above was reversed, it would have been far easier to deal with. It does work however, and the tone is excellent. After putting it on my pedalboard, I used it on a gig the day after finishing it. Using it with no reverb will quickly let you cop Les Paul's signature tone, Well worth it!

Tape Op Delay Pedal

Let me say first, Stew Mac customer service has been very good, that’s not where my concern is. I have now built two of the tape op pedals, and still don’t have a working one.
I’m no expert at soldering, but I know how it is done. The issue on this pedal is the size of the board and the amount of parts you need to cram on it.
If this project was on a slightly larger board, it would be easy. As it is, you need a very fine tipped soldering iron and a lot of patience. The board can be scorched, and leads on the parts have to be bent to fit in the spaces.
I’d love to get this working. Stew Mac was kind enough to send me a second set of parts, and although I did a better job, it was a challenge. I get a clean signal through the pedal, but no effect.

Sweet delay pedal!!

This is the third pedal that I put together, which would be the second successful one. Ha! The first one was a complete failure, the second one was the Stew Mac Tube Screamer, and I needed some technical assistance from the Stew Mac crew to ultimately get it right. This one I accidentally broke a component, when I was just starting. After getting it replaced, it was full throttle to a completed pedal, and it sounds great!! You can dial it in to get the right amount of delay.
Thanks again to Stew Mac!!

A nice, unique pedal.

Great pedal, but it pays to read the reviews. As others experienced, some of the included caps were clearly not what was used in the prototype and, therefore, a bit big for the board, but being aware of that fact helped me plan. I've got a lot of pedal building experience, but I'm getting kinda hooked on these StewMac projects and I've found ways to predict and work around the minor snags.

As promised, this digital delay has the quirky character you would expect from an analog delay creating a more natural echo rather than a series of quieter clones. This is NOT a DD3. I'm a Keeley Mag Echo guy and this pedal, although it has a character of its own, fits that feel. I think it works best as a subtle 80s-ish effect, when you want more "space" than a reverb can offer.

Finally, I'd like to commend StewMac for posting my reviews (and I assume all the others) even when they were not 100% glowing. The tiny criticisms among the generally positive reviews are informative, they let us know what to expect, and lead to an overall better customer experience.

That's how it should be.

This is about the service instead of the product

While the pedal kit is cool, StewMac's customer service and technical support are unbelievably good. It's almost like they value their customers and want them to return. So many of their competitors and contemporaries do not operate in this fashion. It's truly refreshing. Great job, guys.

As a qualified music equipment tech this was an easy build. Did a few mods and it worked first time. Instructions were clear and not overly "tech" for a novice. Sounds great.
