StewMac Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar Kit

About This Item

Torrefied tops now available!
Build a great sounding dreadnought-size guitar from AAA-grade tonewoods. Start with the advantage of precision machining from our Ohio shop.

  • Carved mahogany neck
  • Accurately bent sides
  • Bookmatched back, joined and cut to shape
  • AAA spruce top with soundhole and rosette channel
  • Solid ebony fingerboard, bridge, and overlays

Designed with your success in mind
With the kit, you get a lot of help to make sure your guitar turns out great. The full-size blueprint is modeled after a prized vintage Martin, and shows exactly how every part fits. A sturdy cardboard body mold holds the guitar sides in the perfect contour as you build.

The instruction book is really a short course in guitarmaking, by luthiers Todd Sams and Dan Erlewine; no other kit has anything like it. Todd and Dan made the step-by-step DVD that's included with the kit, too. From start to finish, these guitarmakers guide you to a successful build.

You don't need a big shop
We've done the critical machining, so the neck joint and other parts fit well right from the start.

A slotted bone nut and shaped bone saddle are included, along with inlays, bindings and our two-way Hot Rod truss rod. (We know that tuning machines are something you'll prefer to choose for yourself.)

New torrefied spruce option
Choose a torrefied spruce top for the stability, tone and look of well-aged vintage wood. This high-temperature, low-oxygen kiln drying improves the wood, similar to decades of natural aging.

    Included in our kits:
  • Solid AAA tonewoods: Spruce, Indian Rosewood and Mahogany
  • Precisely machined neck joint at the 14-fret, dovetail or bolt-on
  • Bridge pins, end pin, frets, pickguard, bindings, rosette and trim
  • Hot Rod two-way adjustable truss rod
  • Precut heavy cardboard molds for trouble-free body assembly
  • Full-size blueprint and bracing template
  • Illustrated 36-page spiral-bound instruction book
  • Step-by-step DVD: Building an Acoustic Guitar Kit

Overall, a great kit. Instructions are good, however; a number of operations are not explicitly explained. The DVD is also helpful. The quality of the parts is also very good. The top and back are very clean with no knots.

Currently, I am about half way done and only have a couple of gripes. First, I do not think I would ever use the internal mold and waist clamp method again. I had a real difficult time trying to keep the correct body shape. It's also difficult to put the waist clamp on without marring the surface, and you have to do this several times. Also, a minor complaint is it was a pain to find the centerline on the top and back. There was no visible change in grain on the surface or edge that would give it away. It would not seem to be that difficult to mark the centerline when they produce them. Also, the X braces are shaped where you have to cut the joint, which makes it impossible to cut a tight joint.

Wow! I live in Australia and this was here in 4 days!

Great kit. Nicely done and I'm looking forward to putting it all together. High quality, so I'm very happy with that. The only thing to complain about, as a new kit-er, is that the cost of all the materials NOT included are nearly as much as the kit! You need buffers, and sand paper, and colour tones, etc. Bit pricey. But how about that delivery time? Astounding. I did order the other bit (well a lot of them) and they were here in a similar time. Good stuff.

Great kit, great guitar!

This was a really enjoyable project, and the finished product just sounds awesome! Materials and support (instructions and video) in the kit were top notch. I have sort of intermediate woodworking skills, and this took me about two months of spare time to put together. I noodled along figuring out ways to do things myself instead of purchasing the available purpose-made tools, but if you wanted to go quicker all kinds of gadgets are available to help. Super fun project, two thumbs up!

Dreadnought Guitar

This guitar sounds as great as it looks especially with the Fishman pickup I installed. I'm so impressed that I have another one in the works along with an OM. The instructions are clear and I'm happy with my first build but obviously there are things I would like to improve on for next time around. Good thing I've got two more to go. Thanks StewMac, much appreciated.

Very professional

Hi everyone, the kit has been sent to France rapidly (under a week). No packing problems, every elements well-packed, sounds great. Stewmac customer-contact is highly performing.

Note for french customer :
The price in € given by Stewmac doesn't include french taxes, so do not be surprised at freight delivery to add 20% of the price (TVA). There was also an additionnal tax from the french custom (~16€), and 18€ for FedEx that has handled the custom operations at Roissy Charles-de-Gaulle.

This guitar sounds great

I had a blast building this thing. This was my first guitar so I was worried I would get lost in some process, but the instructions + video made it very easy. I learned a lot about basic woodworking along the way.

The tone is out of this world. Overall balanced, with punchy low end. Its really good for finger style.

OM-18 Kit

By

Verified Buyer

This OM-18 is my 2nd kit to build. The first one was the Dreadnought HD28 also w/ a torrified top & dovetail joint neck. I was very pleased with both guitars but I think the OM is my favorite. If you follow directions and are a descent wood worker it will be a success. The finishing is my favorite part of the process and probably the most difficult for many builders to achieve the ultimate finish. I give Stewmac kudos for their quality and willingness to please their customers.

My critique is with the bolt on neck. I only review to suggest an improvement. An adjustable shim set neck is needed.

Fantastic guitar

I am an experienced wood worker and got intrigued by the idea of building a good guitar. This was my first experience in doing so. I did lots of research before buying the stewmac kit. I decided on the rosewood kit with the tortified siska top and a dovetail neck. I was a bit intimidated once I got the kit and I was determined however to make it as perfect as possible. I found the instructions to be very good . Even though I had a petty good compliment of tools I did need to purchase some speciality tools like router bits, deep clamps, and a bridge setting jig. I also contacted a local luthier and he was more than happy to help me by checking my work from time to time at no charge. (This helped assure me that I was on track and not making any major mistakes). He was impressed by the kit and my work in general and gave me some helpful tips. I took my time and checked and double checked every measurement every step. I finished the guitar with lacquer which was easier than I thought it would be. It was both satisfying and fun. But you definitely need a respirator when spraying lacquer for sure and some kinda spray booth with an exhaust fan. I did opt to have a friend do the setup since he was a professional which was about the same cost or a little more than getting everything I would have needed to do it myself.
Ok now my overall assessment of the experience:
Wow. It sounds totally amazing. I was blown away by the richness of tone and the ease of the action. I absolutely love the end result. It was a totally satisfying experience. I am so glad to have done this project. My only regret now is that I don’t have a good enough of an excuse to justify building another dreadnought. (I am still trying to figure out how to justify doing it again especially since I have the tools and the experience now.). If you have the time and patience I would encourage you to build one of these.

Excellent guitar!

I bought one of the Granadillo kits (same as the rosewood one but granadillo back and sides instead) to build a guitar for a friend. I just finished it a few days ago and I am sure he will be very happy. Now I only have one problem... it sounds and looks so good that I want to build another one for myself!! :)
