StewMac Body-Built Acoustic Guitar Kit

About This Item

More than a kit—it's a FANTASTIC guitar!
Have you dreamed of owning a beautiful custom acoustic guitar? You know the one: it's got a BIG and powerful commanding voice that owns any room and plays like a dream—completely effortless in your hands.

No need to just dream about it—Now YOU can build it!

Based on customer requests, we developed a brand new custom acoustic kit that is far simpler and requires less woodworking. Now ANYONE can build an exceptional acoustic in a small space and with minimal tools.

We made building your first acoustic guitar a whole lot easier
What makes it so easy? The body is built for you! We've expertly braced the top and back, assembled the body, and bound it completely. These steps can be very complicated and require a lot of specialized tools.

If you've been on the fence about building an acoustic guitar but thought it looked too intimidating, this is the guitar you've been waiting for. Designed specifically for the first time builder, you'll build it using many tools you already own.

The ultimate head start
Part of what makes acoustic guitar building so intimidating is the sheer number of steps involved—admittedly, traditional acoustic guitar building is a LOT of work. However, with this kit, about half the work's already done for you. This saves literally days of work and greatly cuts down on the number of specialized tools and jigs you need to complete the build.

Here are just a few of the complicated steps we've done for you:
  • Joining, thickness-sanding, and profiling the soundboard and back
  • Installing the rosette and cutting the soundhole
  • Bracing the top and back plates
  • Accurately bending the sides
  • Building the rim, installing the linings, and getting the body geometry right
  • Gluing the top and back plates to the sides
  • Installing the body binding and end graft
  • Cutting the dovetail mortise
  • Rough carving the neck shape
  • Precisely cutting the dovetail tenon
  • Neck is rough fit to the body, ready for final fitting
  • Fingerboard is inlaid and pre-slotted for frets
  • Frets are pre-cut and radiused
  • And many other parts have been shaped and prepared—saving you HOURS of time

And when you open the box, everything is there, ready for you to dive in: fully built body, shaped neck, slotted fingerboard with installed diamond inlays, precision carved bridge with pins, slotted nut, saddle, and pickguard.

But don't worry...there's still plenty of detail work left for you to customize and truly make it your dream guitar. You'll be dialing in the neck to the perfect shape for your hand, customizing the shape of the peghead, installing the frets, setting the neck, finishing, and more. From choosing how you'll finish it to finding the perfect appointments, the final look and feel are all up to you.

Choose the model that fits you
Both models feature a solid Sitka Spruce top for exceptional tone and a rich voice. We offer these kits with either solid or laminate back and sides:

The all solid wood model, with Khaya Mahogany back and sides, is perfect for achieving the nuanced tone you'd expect from the best acoustic instruments.

If you're looking for something to take out on the road, many artists prefer the laminate model, with Sapele back and sides, for its durability and resistance to temperature and humidity changes.

Complete your build with the perfect tuners
We leave it up to you to pick the tuning machines for your guitar. From classic vintage open-gear models to high ratio closed-back models, we've got exactly what you're looking for. And with countless designs and plating choices, it's easy to find the right set.

We're here to help
And when you buy from StewMac, you get a whole lot more than "just a kit." You're buying 50+ years of history and dedication to helping musicians just like you get more out of their guitars.

We stand by every product we sell with our Lifetime Promise and each kit comes with our expert-written but easy to follow instructions, with 23 pages of photos, diagrams, and every detail you'll need.

And if you get stuck, no sweat... our customer service techs are here to help you with any questions, from opening the box to applying the finish.

This is a guitar you'll be thrilled with for decades to come. Get yours now!

Solid woods throughout

By

Verified Buyer

I bought this kit as I have tried several times with other kits to actually complete a guitar which I can call mine. This kit reached me in the U.K. in under a week on opening, I found the woods were first class and the bridge and fingerboard are solid rosewood. Although it was only delivered today I can see me having a lot of fun building this kit. All the parts fit together well and not much fitting is required. My biggest problem is fitting and filing the frets, but I’ll get over it I’m sure. In my humble opinion and for the money you just can’t go wrong with this kit.

Shipped fast, received in perfect order. The instructions included are extremely valuable concerning neck joint geometry. Overall, this is a fantastic kit, with the potential to finish as a world class musical instrument. I'd highly recommend this kit for any intermediate builder with limited shop capabilities.

Very cool idea!

Have thought about the idea of building a from scratch acoustic guitar kit guitar before, but was intimidated with the idea of having to do all the body work. This kit got me to take the plunge! Haven't started work on it yet, but have been impressed with the quality of materials and workmanship on the assembled body (solid mahogany and spruce).

I do agree with other reviews that the instructions are a little sparse at points, but it seems like there are other resources online and in books to be able to fill in the blanks. Looking forward to getting this built and playing it for the first time!

Great place to start

Overall, I'm satisfied with having gone this route. It's a good way to familiarize yourself with some of the critical aspects of assembling a guitar. I won't get more detailed, as a few of the other reviews cover this kit really well.
I've since started a rosewood Dreadnought kit with more confidence now that I have more full understanding of the process. If you believe you'd like to build a few guitars, then this a great start. Make your mistakes on this one, then put the hours in to building your own body on the next one.

grreat guitar, old instructions

this is my second Kit. the first one was the regular kit, D18 style. i did expect this would be somehow the same. the body was made very nice. needed only sanding actualy. everything was straight and well made. a couple of minor things was that the bracings where only tappered, not scalloped. also i couldnt see any squeze out, so you never know if they used enough glue on the bracings.

in the manual there where a few mistakes. the photos where not correct and where just coppied from the normal kit. a big mistake was the messurement of the bridge. it was totaly wrong on the instructions, about 4 mm off. good thing i asked a professional luthier otkherwise it would not have been intonated right.

i must say that the sound is pretty good. very much output. i think because the top is only 2,7 mm thick instead of 3 mm. it gives more responses. hope the body will stay okay the next few years.

in all it was a piece of cake to build this guitar for a low price. i saw the body was made in China, but i know now a lot of material of stew mac comes directly from China these days. its good tone wood and it looks that its good build

Could be better

By

Verified Buyer

With more photographs and more instruction this kit would definitely be better. I have built lots of things, and many things from kits. Even though this is my first guitar, a couple of small mistakes I made could’ve been avoided with better instruction and more photographs. The positive take away is that the material seems to be good quality but the build is completely up to you and your ability to discern sparse directions.

I was so impressed I ordered another. The only criticizer I have is the fret board and frets..(Asian style) The next kit I'll know to cut my own frets and use my own frets....I understand. that cost savings had to come from somewhere for this price......when are you coming out with an OM?
