Great Kit, well worth the money.

This is the 4th guitar I've built from a kit and it's by far the most well thought of the bunch. The other kits all had something wrong or missing or broken. The other suppliers did make the corrections but it always took a lot of time, photos, emails and waiting to get things right. This kit came beautifully packaged, complete, and with detailed instruction about how to put it together. My one complaint is that the headstock isn't large enough to do a strat cutout on. the pieces are of good quality, great if you consider the whole kit was under 175.00. I will at some point replace the tuners and pickups but for now they are good. The neck is a pleasant surprise with not nearly the fretwork needed as the other kits. All in all I'm very pleased with this kit.

More work than expected

By

I'm giving this kit 4 stars because there is more work involved with the build that requires some special tools. I don't mind that at all, just feel that this particular issue could've been described in the description a little better. I'm referring to the fretboard of the kit. Thankfully, I didn't need to pound the frets in place, like the instructions show to do. I do however need fret files to round the frets where they were pounded on to be put in place. As far as a word of advice to any one interested in the kit, pay for the upgrades. Better tuning pegs, better pickups, etc. It does and can get expensive, but like any guitar, the more money you put into the better your final product. You can't spend $200 and get a $1,000 guitar, but with this kit you have one hell of a head start.

Got my kit a couple weeks ago as a present for my granddaughter! She doesn’t know yet but I am excited to help her build it. The kit looked perfect, looks like the neck fits good. Did not look at the other parts. Nice that it comes in a box with the neck bolted on so you can see how it fits. Very happy so far with stewmac

I am not a guitar player but this is a kit for my 11 year old boy who plays. I find the instructions fairly easy to understand, and the kit to be in good order. I am finding it easy to put together, some additional research may need to be done to get a top end finish though.

Good and Bad

By

Verified Buyer

The good is that the kit arrived fairly quickly and the components looked like good quality to build a nice guitar. The bad is that I purchased this kit for the entire experience of building a guitar from scratch. What I received was the neck already bolted onto the body and a headstock with very little room for customization. I contacted customer service and they offered very little attempt at making things right. Their response was we're sorry that the instruction manual has not been updated and basically told me if I didn't like the kit, I could return it. So I should return the kit, take my money and shop elsewhere?

Patience is key to success

S Style Kit received as a gift. Learned tons during 2 months of sanding, painting, polishing, filing, fret work, soldering, drilling, researching, adjusting & learning from mistakes. The kit itself had flaws such as several popped fret ends requiring gluing & body too thin for trem block (yes, there is an adjustment for that) but Stew MAC tech, Gene, coached me thru those plus finishing challenges and sent me needed supplies. Finished product plays & looks good. I highly recommend Stew Mac kits based on the Customer Service received.

In hindsight, this was a fun Covid project and patience is key to success. Instructions could use updating with fret board radius actually 9.5” vs 16” and better finishing steps found in another Stew Mac tutorial (i12225). If using the Nitrocellulose lacquer finishing products, listen to instructions and use a well ventilated area and respirator mask. I sprayed outside and was still troubled by the fumes. Also, had to purchase several different grits of sandpaper, wait out bad weather and curing times to get the desired finish. Bottom line is I’m proud of the finished product and it was a fantastic learning experience. Thank you Stew Mac and Gene!

did not line up

By

I bought this kit from Stew Mac, I thought they were considered the best quality. The package arrived in good time that was were the good times stopped. The neck was really loose in the pocket; I looked online and was told that it will be okay. There are only two places where there are pre holes, in the body for the neck and bridge. When I assembled the neck, bridge, and pick-ups do not line up. I had experienced builders look at it and said you need to fill in the wholes Stew Mac (the pros) did and re drill them and line them up. This is my first build and thought it would be fun. I hope I can fix it so it is playable. If I do another build I will go to another company save money and better quality.

Response from StewMac

Hi James,

We are so sorry that your first build wasn't fun and had these complications. That's unacceptable. Two things I need to relay:

Your comments helped us evaluate and improve the quality of this kit and our process. We are now shipping kits with better fitting parts for a trouble-free build.

And we're happy our customer service team was able to make things right with you -- we thank you for this opportunity and hope StewMac can help you with your next guitar!
