Economy Covered Gear 3+3 Tuners

About This Item

Inexpensive tuners are a quick and easy way to get your guitar up and strummin' again.

  • 14:1 ratio
  • Fit 5/16"-diameter pegholes
  • Press-fit bushings and screws included
  • Set of 6: 3 left, 3 right
  • Chrome

Installation Tips

Bushings: We recommend the #2061 Bushing Reamer (.328" diameter) to cut a clean, accurate counterbore for a professional job. Fit the press-fit tuner bushings correctly so your tuners will work smoothly.

Mounting screws: Pilot holes required. Installing delicate screws into hard wood requires great care and accuracy. We highly recommend the #1711 Depth-stop Drill Bit (No.50 bit) for the pilot hole before installing these screws. Lubricate the screw threads with cutting lubricant (also wax or a bar of soap) to reduce friction and help them thread properly.

Saved my F-35

I could hardly believe you had the covered tuners with diagonally-oriented screws in the correct positions for my 1974 Fender acoustic. I could have filled holes and tapped new ones but this was a sweet surprise. Great service too.

Inexpensive but solid. A perfect match for my 80's Fender Japanese acoustic.

Nice, smooth action

I needed to replace the tuners on a 1971 Harmony H-166 and these are very similar in appearance/shape/size to the originals. I lubricated the gears with petroleum jelly before fitting them because once the screws are in, the gear cover makes the gears inaccessible. They look good and operate smoothly. Good value for money!

Exactly what they are

These are not the best tuners out there. These are not high-performance tuners to "upgrade" stock tuners. These are cheap tuners to replace broken cheap tuners.

If you're looking to "hot rod" a guitar to a performance machine, these are not the droids you're looking for. Move along. If you repair guitars for pay, you are probably already aware that you will have at least a dozen customers in a given calendar year that will be looking for exactly these tuners to fix up a neglected, abused, or just thoroughly used Epiphone/Ibanez/Garage Sale Special as cheaply as they can, who have absolutely no interest in improving the performance of their tuners if it means spending more money than the bare minimum.

They are not objectively great tuning machines. I rated them 5 stars because as economy tuners they are 5-star, and they don't pretend to be high-quality, hand-made, zero-backlash gizmos. They are parts for guitars that need these parts, and thousands of customers consider them "good enough if it means I pay less than $30 for new tuners and don't need new holes drilled"

Perfect cheap replacements

These are exactly the same as the originals on my cheap Fender Gemini III from the late 80s that had worn out. They work great, and are perfect replacements.

Economy Covered Gear 3+3 Tuners

Can't really say anything good or bad about these tuners. They are what they are. I had to repair a twenty-year-old Epiphone acoustic with a broken tuner peg. These are about the only game in town. Only one other of the type, with about the same price and quality. I would have upgraded to better tuners if I could have. But it would have entailed filing in the screw holes and drilling new ones. For an inexpensive older guitar, it wasn't worth it.
The tuners themselves are so-so, about what you'd expect for the price. Some work fine, a couple were quite difficult to tune by hand (thank goodness for the EZ Winder).

I got these to replace the ones on my 90's Danelectro U2. I was hoping they were better than the stock ones. They were the same. In fairness to Stew Mac they are listed as economy tuners. That's why I gave them a good rating even though I returned them.

Newby guitar fixer

Everything I buy from StewMac is well represented so I am never disappointed, I get what I expect. I have many great hand tools, measuring devices that work just as advertized. I have the Neck Jig which is really nice to work with.
I also have a small reference library of great manuals. I really like Dan E and his videos, seems like a guy that would be fun to hang with at the shop, lot of knowledge and experience there.
I am a beginner working on guitars but the tools and the online videos are amazing! I build and repair mainly my own axes but people are starting to have me fix little things for them. With StewMac I always have dependable delivery and quality parts and tools.
This is what all American companies should be like.
