Golden Age Restoration Tuners for Slotted Peghead Guitar - Scallop-end

About This Item

Pre-war Kluson style tuners reborn! Replica 3-on-plate tuners with "bent tab" worm supports, as made by Kluson from the 1930s to the '70s.

They feature authentic steel baseplates and white or cream plastic knobs, plus 15:1 gear ratio for better tuning than the originals.

Golden Age tuners are available exclusively from StewMac, made with our expert eye for details and exact specifications.

"People who build replica instruments or who do restoration or repair work are just going to love these." —Frank Ford, vintage instrument repair expert

Golden Age tuners are the rebirth of popular early 20th Century tuning machine designs, featuring simple steel plates and open gears. Replacements for the originals have long been sought by collectors and repairmen, to restore older guitars and improve their tuning. Our special relic nickel-finished versions complement vintage hardware and add an authentic look to reproduction guitars.

Bright nickel tuners have gloss finished knobs, relic tuners have matte finished knobs.
  • 15:1 gear ratio for improved tuning
  • Vintage-style riveted worm supports
  • .236" (6.00mm) string post diameter
  • Original mounting screw spacing (screws incuded)
  • 1-3/8" (34.93mm) string post spacing
Also available to fit solid pegheads.

"The Golden Age Restoration tuners are really great. I have just put them onto my 1929 Gibson L-1...I like the fact that someone went to the trouble of making them look right." —John Evans, Brussels Belgium

"Great tuners with the right look and feel! The only thing different about them is that they are better made and more functional." —Richard Barnes, Pomona CA

Installation Tips

Peghole spacing: Plate-mounted tuners can't work efficiently if the pegholes are improperly aligned. Our Tuning Machine Drill Jig for Slotted Pegheads ensures the correct 1-3/8" string roller spacing for accurate tuning.

Mounting screws: Pilot holes required. Installing delicate screws into hard wood requires great care and accuracy. We highly recommend the #1714 Depth-stop Drill Bit (3/32" bit) for the pilot hole before installing these screws. Lubricate the screw threads with cutting lubricant (also wax or a bar of soap) to reduce friction and help them thread properly.

Nice tuners

I bought these to replace some tuners that came on a guitar kit from fretwire. They are considerably better and now I can easily tune this guitar. They are nothing fancy but that's what I was looking for.

Replacement for pre-war guitar

Guitar made (or sold by) SS Stewart ca 1930. Old tuners degraded. These replacements work very well, better than original. (I will do my very best to never buy another slot-head guitar. I don't have the patience to restring. Wonder if Charlie Patton et al. had this problem?)

Great upgrade for old failing tuners.

These look better and function better than the original equipment that was on my guitar. The closer gearing makes it much easier to accurately tune. I’d recommend these to a friend or a complete stranger. Anyone that wants upgraded tuners.

I bought these for an old Martin-stye 5-18 terz guitar that I am making, it gives a classy appearance that looks just perfect for this project.

Perfect Fit

The plastic buttons on the original tuners on my 1930's Oahu Lap Steel Guitar had virtually dissolved from age and needed replacement. The Golden Age Restoration Tuners I purchased from Stew-Mac were a perfect fit and almost exact replicas of the originals. They were a snap to install. The guitar is now playable again and the new tuners work better than the originals.
