Schaller Signum Bridge

About This Item

Better sound, playability and looks
This beautiful wrap-tail bridge is smoothly comfortable, with precise intonation and locking posts for great tone.

Locked for tone
Locking posts couple the bridge to the guitar body for rich dynamics, overtones and sustain. The height-adjustable posts fit flat or archtop solidbodies. A low-profile wrench is included for tightening.

Shaped for playability
The sculpted shape is smooth and comfortable under your picking hand. Strings load at the front and wrap over the back onto the notched saddles. String ball-ends are held in square recesses that keep them from turning and untwisting.

Two Allen screws adjust the overall intonation, and each saddle fine-tunes individually, with 9mm of travel. Use an 11mm drill bit to install the bushings.

    Includes:
  • Height-adjustable locking posts
  • High quality knurled bushings
  • Slim, offset design locking wrench
  • Allen wrench for general intonation
  • Intonation screws in 2 different lengths
  • String spread 2-1/16"
    (52.50mm)
  • Saddle radius 12"
    (305mm)
  • Post spacing 3-1/4"
    (81.80mm)
  • Post threads M8 x 1.25

Die-cast zinc with machined brass saddles.

Great bridge... BUT required some tweaking

By

Comfortable to play, great for palm muting (no sharp edges), sustains really well, and looks gorgeous. BUT... installing it turned out to be a rather frustrating experience. Apologies for the fairly long post - but I'm hoping other builders won't run into the same problems. I should mention up front that the bridge ended up working really well for me, and I'm very happy with it.

When I first stringed my new homebuilt guitar, I noticed some strange rattling and buzzing when playing the low E string. This was not caused by fret buzz - the neck is dead straight, and the frets had been levelled. Raising the action also didn't help. Fretting the E string still resulted in rattling and buzzing, so it wasn't an issue with the nut slot either.

At this point I was beginning to fear that the truss rod was loose, and was somehow particularly susceptible to the frequencies of the low E string. I had obviously applied the usual silicone bathtub sealer (I'm using a double action rod). Tightening the truss rod also didn't help. Would I really need to drill little holes in the fretboard and fill in some more silicone?

I finally turned my attention to the bridge. The saddles are slanted (as they obviously should be), and the strings seemed to rest correctly on the top (forward) edge of each saddle. However, when I forced the low E string down to the top edge of the saddle with a screw driver, the rattle and buzz disappeared completely! Apparently, due to the wrap around design and insufficient slanting of the saddles, the low E-string was actually resting on the back (lower) edge of the saddle. Thicker strings generally resist sharp bends, which meant there was apparently insufficient downward pressure to force the string down on the forward edge of the saddle. I think this is a design flaw, but it was easily solved by filing down the groove slightly (and yes, the bridge posts are vertical, and the bridge is properly locked).

Excellent.

This bridge fixed the tonal issues I was having with a build that didn't like the brass bodied bridge that I originally had on it. The neck angle on this guitar is slight, so there are not a lot of choices in bridges that are low enough in profile. The Signum did just fine. I'm 50/50 on the locking studs. I guess you take the bad with the good. A bit pricey too, but overall excellent.

A very solid bridge

I bought this after I converted my BC Rich 10-string to a six. I play with heavier strings (10-52) and a fairly high action, so it's difficult to find a bridge that will adjust far enough back. I tried the Gotoh 510UB but it lacked the range I needed, even with the saddles reversed. This Schaller had the range. It's not the easiest to dial in intonation and height because of the way the locking posts and other adjustments work, but once you have it, and lock it down, it's incredibly solid and has a very nice tone. Schaller's a bit pricier than the competition, but you get bulletproof German engineering, fit and finish. One caveat - the post bushings are narrower in external diameter than many others. If your guitar is metric with a standard M8 post thread, you can just re-use your existing bushings. If however you have a Gibson or other guitar with larger bushings and standard threads, you will have to either shim the new bushings to make them fit, or re-use both your original posts and bushings (which will sacrifice the locking feature of the Schaller).

Bought this bridge for a custom build and it is absolutely gorgeous. It was tricky to get adjusted but it works great.

A MOST Excellent Bridge...!

This wrap around bridge by Schaller is the heat. I had purchased one of these along with a HipShot Baby Grand bridge, which actually costs a few dollars more, but on receipt found that the Schaller was FAR better in quality, fit, and finish. I returned the HipShot and got a second Schaller Signum Bridge, and am quite pleased with them, as you will be too.

great part

Came with two lengths of post and inserts. Everything was as advertised. I like that the bridge has only registration grooves so that I can tool the string slots to my own satisfaction. If you dont own nut slotting files the saddle grooves may be a bit difficult to make work straight from the box.
