Waverly Ukulele Friction Pegs

About This Item

"The smoothest and most consistent-working non-geared ukulele tuning pegs I've ever seen, new or old." —Matt Umanov, Umanov Guitars, NYC

In the early 1900s the ukulele was king. Waverly uke pegs bring back a simple but innovative non-geared design that tuned many fine instruments: the knob screw adjusts the tension, and an internal coil spring provides smoothness and slip-resistance. Unsurpassed by standard friction tuners, they combine precision-machined quality with an authentic vintage look. Simply the finest traditional friction pegs you can install on your ukulele.

Choice of beautifully polished knobs: curly koa, solid ebony or grained ivoroid.

Nickel-plated brass, set of 4.

Waverly Ukulele Friction Pegs offer modern precision with vintage style, ideal for instrument restoration. Waverly tuners will work properly in pegholes with diameters between 7/32" and 1/4" (5.56mm to 6.35mm).

For new builds, we recommend drilling a 3/16" (5mm) peghole diameter.

For appearance and proper function, pegholes should be chamfered for the top washer and the rear housing. We have just the right countersink bit for cutting this chamfer.

Peghead thickness can vary from 5/16" to 9/16" (7.94mm to 14.29mm).

This is the first time I used these and they are as nice as I expected them to be. The perfect tuner for repairs, replacements and reproductions etc.

do the trick

I like using these when I want to play with peghead designs without "ears". With these, they seem to be holding the pitch well. Installation is very simple but have the recommended drill diameters and countersinks on hand.

Great friction tuners

By

For lightweight, small profile tuning machines, these are great. The buttons are tiny compared to others out there, and they are still very light weight, making them ideal for replacing old vintage pegs or tuning machines on smaller ukuleles. (Photo is a comparison of size to the stock white tuners on my Ohana sopranino)

Definitely take to a luthier for installation. My DIY attempt wasn’t terrible, but also not the cleanest either.

Quality is great

The only complaint would be the the overall size looks diminutive even on an old Martin soprano uke. Aside from that they are very nicely made and the spring loaded ferrell is a huge improvement over standard friction pegs.

Much needed!

I built a replica of a Martin 5M uke with tight curl mahogany and I wanted some special tuning pegs for it. Waverly provided that opportunity and I was thrilled with the quality and appearance of these pegs. Easy installation, smooth tuning, great vintage vibe... Waverly is the very best!

Installation Tips

By

The installation of these peghead tuners requires a bit of finesse; not much but some if you want a professional looking install. First, make a set up piece that is the same thickness as your headstock. Second, take the peghead tuner apart. You'll have a shaft with beveled washer, a spring, a barrel, a button and a screw. Third, on your set up piece, using a drill press, drill a 3/16" thru hole. Fourth, chuck the countersink recommended by StewMac into a drill press. Fifth, line up the countersink with one side of the thru hole. Sixth, DO NOT TURN ON THE POWER FOR THE DRILL PRESS! All that is required is to lower the countersink into one side of the thru hole and with GENTLE pressure from the drill press feed lever GENTLY HAND TURN the countersink. After a few turns check the fit of the shaft washer in the counter sink. Repeat until the shaft washer fits just proud of the counter sink bevel. Seventh; turn the set up piece over and repeat the counter sink process until the bevel of the barrel fits into the countersink perfectly. Eighth; assemble the peghead tuner in the counter sunk holes and snug up the screw that goes thru the button till the amount of friction resistance is obtained. In summary; always use a set up piece so you can tell how the wood of the headpiece is going to accept the countersink operation (tearout), go slow, use a drill press to ensure straight holes and countersinks and NEVER EVER power the drill press; hand turn only.

Couldn’t be more pleased.

I was bummed when my 1930’s Gretsch uke became continually inconsistent with holding proper intonation. Being an older instrument, i was hesitant to make any modifications or do any kind of drilling in this old uke. Thankfully Stew Mac gives all the specs available to properly gauge what’ll work for your project. Definitely was pleased with the prompt timing for shipping my order. The Waverly tuners easily slipped in to the already counter-sunk holes and effortlessly held in place. This is a fantastic product and I highly recommend it to anyone considering replacing their uke tuners. Thank you, Stew Mac!

Almost perfect

These are great tuning pegs. I ordered two sets because I was replacing a worn set on an old Martin Taropatch. I ordered the ebony knobs. All went smoothly except one of the knobs was stuck tight on the shaft....from the factory. I had a dickens of a time getting it off without scratching it.
They look wonderful and made the instrument.....which is very hard to tune anyway, play like new.
I recommend also getting the chamfer tool.
