Bakelite Pickguard for Tele & Esquire

About This Item

The real deal. Retro appeal! Fender used Bakelite® on the Tele® and Esquire® guitars from 1950 to '54.

Go all out with your retrofit—use genuine Bakelite on your old (or new) Tele!

0.084" (2.13mm) thick with 5 mounting holes. Single ply, squared edge, and unshielded—just like the originals. Pickguard screws sold separately.

Collector trivia: Bakelite was developed in 1905 by Leo Baekeland, who had set out to find an alternative to shellac. In 1993 it was designated a National Historic Chemical Landmark by the American Chemical Society in recognition of its significance as the world's first synthetic plastic.

A great choice

I bought this for a Fender Baja that was equipped with a flimsy, staticy plastic guard. A little finessing of the screws and a little scraping of the control plate cutout, and it went right in. A big plus is that when scratches show up, they don't add a whitish cast to the finish. I'm about to buy another.

Works really well with my barncaster. Classic look and feel. Solid.

on a Squier 50s Classic Vibe Tele

Just swapped the nasty plastic original. 3/5 screws aligned really well; 1 not some bad; and 1 not at all -- just drove the original wood screw straight into the soft pine with a screwdriver. Bakelite lies flat and has a nice sturdy feel; guitar has slightly more resonance, too!

Nice Piece of Kit!

I bought this to put on my new Squire CV 50's tele to make it into a blackguard Esquier... (spelling intentional!) Looks great and holes lined up great on mine! It's a bit shiny for me so I'll be working it a little bit to dull it up, otherwise it's great!

Bakelite Tele pickguard

By

I bought a bakelite pick guard to replace the plastic one on my Fender AS Telecaster to solve static buildup and noise issues, which it does quite well. My only complaint is the the top 2 screw holes did not align correctly, so I had to try to get them aligned by widening the holes slightly.

I bought three, each fit the tele just a little bit differently. I had to fine tune around the control plate.

Very nice!

I learned that there are different 'types' of bakelite apparently. This one is a bit heavier and feels more like micarta (just feels that way ... I'm not saying that it is). But it fit dead-perfect on my Fender Tele and it lays really nice and flat, letting me go to a 5-screw mounting rather than 8 which fits better with the vintage look I wanted. I'll get another of these for an Esquire soon. What more can I say as endorsement?

Nice looking, fairly good fit...

Looks very good and material is excellent, fit a little bit tight on a Vintage style Fender Custom Shop Tele, but servicable.
