Wilkinson/Gotoh VSVG Vintage Tremolo

About This Item

Improved Strat tuning stability, sustain and reliability!

The baseplate holes are elongated so the screws won't bind, for smooth, accurate pitch return. For tuning stability, the string mounting holes are staggered in the steel block for more consistent string angle over the adjustable locking bent-steel saddles.

2-1/8" string spread.

Includes:
Springs, spring claw, arm with white plastic knob (#3534-B black tremolo has black plastic knob), mounting screws, saddle adjustment screw and Allen wrenches.

Solid upgrade

The Vintage Tremolo is a solid upgrade for a Strat. I only have one problem... the tremolo arm is push in, however when I'm playing hard the arm works it's way out of the body. I've even had the arm literally fall out of the guitar while playing!

Finally - a decent Strat bridge.

I have a 73 Strat I bought new. It has gone through several bridges over the years none of them cheap and none I was really happy with. The last one was an expensive Fender bridge and it was OK for a while but then there problems with the arm which ended up snapped off inside the block - I couldn't fix it so had to replace it.

Anyway this Wilkinson Tremolo is a leap ahead. The build quality is like a work of art. Importantly it has the sound and handling characteristics of the best Fender Strat bridges (before they started making them out of crap in the 1970s).

Leo Fender's Strat bridge was a marvel of 1950s design. However that was almost 70 years ago and by now you would imagine that someone would have conducted a review to figure out what was good about it and what needed improvement to perfect what was already a good idea. This bridge has achieved that objective with flying colors.

I have never seen a better Strat bridge regardless of price.

There's a set screw on the block for the tremolo arm which holds it secure.

I bought this bridge for a new strat build and was looking for this string spacing. The bridge is well made and installation was easy. It works as intended and alows for moderate bends while staying in tune.
The adjustment for intonation is more awkward than a traditional strat trem, it involves a screw wheel in the back of the saddle and an allen key and you manually slide the saddle back and forth using the screw wheel. Under tension this is almost impossible and you have to slacken the string considerably to move the saddle, re-tighten the allen screw, check intonation and do it all again if your intonation is off. Once intonated and locked down, it's fine.
The other issue is the trem arm; it just slides in to the trem hole and is not secure, with enough slack in the fit that it can easily just fall out.
So, a decent bridge with some drawbacks.

Great tremolo. Quality as expected and an easy install. I was never into much dive bombing but I did a floating setup and amazed how well it returns to tune. Also I thought this may be difficult to go thru all the setup, individual string height and intonation. Instead it went very well.....either that or I got really lucky. I went with the black as I wanted to create the stealth look on my build. Good buy and StewMac is always great with fast shipping and items in stock.

As usual, great service of quality products from StewMac. I've been using the service for many years on occasion and I've never been disappointed. Thanks for the Tech Tips too, balanced the trem very easily. Thanks as always.

excellent upgrade for my Squire

My stock 6-screw tremolo was impossible to keep in tune, so I got the Wilkinson and could not be happier. It is noticeably heavier with the steel block, and gives me some good sustain. The stainless saddles are beautiful and also feel good on your hand with the rounded shape. The push in adjustable arm is also very nice. It is so easy to just pull it out and push it in, and I have it adjusted to stay in place. Together with locking tuners and alnico pickups, my Squire feels and sounds like my American deluxe Strat. Lastly, I have the bridge adjusted to dive deep and come up a half-step, and it always returns back to tune.

Very good choice

Finding the right bridge with the correct string spacing for Stratocasters is a frustrating experience. This worked out great. My only gripe with StewMac is that they charge 10 bucks for shipping whether you order some screws or pickups.. oh well

Alternative replacement for the crap Fender bridge.

This is a review since I bought it in 2007. The tremolo arm is a bit too low, once you slot it in it will glide in and touch the volume button. I have to bend it higher but it will bend back after long time use.
You must make sure that you don't lose the separate intonation screw.
My string always breaks on the saddle part. I use D'addario stainless steel strings.
I've moved on to another bridge now in 2019.
