Five-Star Banjo Tuning Pegs

About This Item

The most famous name in banjo pegs—exclusively from StewMac. For nearly 50 years Five-Star® pegs have been the choice of players and builders for quality and reliable tuning.

These high quality pegs have the traditional 4:1 ratio, but with planetary gearing for fast, accurate tuning.

Machined brass gear case and shafts, brass ring gear, steel pinion gears, and sealed lubrication ensure durability for long life. The handsome removable knobs have adjustable tension screws for the right feel.

Beautiful knobs and plating
We've greatly expanded your choice of knobs so that you can find the custom look for your new banjo or to perfectly restore a vintage original.

Pick the look that's right for you
  • Ivoroid knobs are machined from Galalith, a dense and durable casein-based material that polishes beautifully. It resembles real ivory, but is a non-animal alternative.
  • Amber Swirl has the look of a loved knob that aged gracefully.
  • Ebony knobs are machined from real wood. They're lightweight and add a custom look to your banjo.
  • Cream has a vintage-correct look for many banjo styles.
  • Black gives a clean, contemporary style to your banjo.
  • Vintage Pearloid is semi-translucent and has the look of early plastics that compliments vintage hardware.

Five-Star pegs fit standard 3/8" (10.00mm) diameter pegholes, and include threaded hex bushings with peghead washers. They fit 7/16" to 3/4" (11.11mm to 19.05mm) peghead thicknesses.

Sold as a set of four. Also available individually.

Our Five-Star 5th String Peg is also available.

Great upggrade tuner. Pricey yes but built to perform and last.

Picked up a dean backwoods 5 string a while back to "see if I like banjo". Decent built instrument for the price, but the factory low cost tuners and head did caused more trouble than music. I picked these tuners for an upgrade. A word of caution to open back players. These tuners are heavy and I had to adjust how I wear the strap to counter balance. Tuners want to pull the head to the ground. Likely because I am playing on a cheap and light instrument. If you bought a quality banjo "by the pound" I would say not a concern.

I had to ream the holes in the head for these to fit. Fortunately had a friend with some reamers and experience. I would recommend these based on quality feel and playability. Overall if you can afford the weight and price....great tuners that work well. Aptly named product I would say.

Replaced 25-Year old Waverly 2-Band Tuners

By

Taking advice from my old friend Banjo Bob down in San Antoine, after my Waverly tuners began showing signs of internal wear, I sprung for a set of Five-Stars. I thought I'd splurge and ordered the gold with ebony tuning knobs, installing them over the weekend. The tuners themselves may be snug internally, but I'm finding the tuning is a bit tricky with the play in the screw opening through the ebony button. I believe the hole/opening is a wee bit over-sized allowing the knob to turn slightly before the slack is taken up and the tuning post is positioned for the desired pitch. As I've found, it's quite easy to over-tighten and then the reverse happens when I loosen the pegs. So-o-o, while I adjust my efforts to this minor annoyance I''m wondering if their is a practical solution of drilling holes in the tuning knobs with snugger tolerances?

The gold set with ebony knobs is quite attractive with my ebony overlaid peg head and natural finished maple neck, rim, and resonator.

Very solid and smooth, these are very well made tuners. Not too heavy, not too light they're just right. I'm using them to restore a vintage banjo my wife's great grandfather built and they do the job perfectly.

This is my second set of Five-Star pegs. The first set we put into my antique Tubaphone over 20 years ago. It is my daily player, so those pegs have gotten a workout. They still tune easily, hold tuning, and the finish is still nice. The second set appears exactly like my first set. We put them into my fretless to replace the friction pegs. They have not stood the test of time like the first set, but I expect them to. They installed easily, work perfectly, and with the ability to pick different colors of pegheads, IMHO they blend in very nicely even on the old antiques. For me, the slight change in look is more than made up for by the huge difference in tuning ability and speed.
