Golden Age Restoration Tuners for Slotted Peghead Guitar - Bell-end

About This Item

Pre-war tuners reborn! Our replica 3-on-plate tuners with simple incised baseplates, as produced by Waverly from the 1920s to the '40s.

They feature authentic steel baseplates and cream knobs, plus 15:1 gear ratio for better tuning than the originals.

Golden Age tuners are available exclusively from StewMac, made with our expert eye for details and exact specifications.

"People who build replica instruments or who do restoration or repair work are just going to love these." —Frank Ford, vintage instrument repair expert

Golden Age tuners are the rebirth of popular early 20th Century tuning machine designs, featuring simple steel plates and open gears. Replacements for the originals have long been sought by collectors and repairmen, to restore older guitars and improve their tuning. Our special relic nickel-finished versions complement vintage hardware and add an authentic look to reproduction guitars.

  • 15:1 gear ratio for improved tuning
  • Vintage-style riveted worm supports
  • Original-shape cream plastic knobs; relic tuners have knobs with a matte finish
  • .236" (6.00mm) string post diameter
  • Original mounting screw spacing (screws included)
  • 1-3/8" (34.93mm) string post spacing
  • Bright nickel, relic nickel or relic brass finishes

Also available to fit solid pegheads.

Note: Plate-mounted tuners can't work efficiently if the pegholes are improperly aligned. Our Tuner Drill Jig ensures the correct spacing for accurate tuning.

"The Golden Age Restoration tuners are really great. I have just put them onto my 1929 Gibson L-1. I like the fact that someone went to the trouble of making them look right." —John Evans, Brussels Belgium

"Great tuners with the right look and feel! The only thing different about them is that they are better made and more functional." —Richard Barnes, Pomona CA

Nice upgrade

I bought the relic brass tuners to upgrade the original tuners on a Martin 000-15S guitar. I had to drill some new holes for the mounting screws. The tuners fit perfectly in the existing holes. They have a nice smooth action and the tuners match the guitar. Thanks

Always use these on my slot head banjos

Firm tuning gears. Also have the drilling guide for installing the tuners. and it makes the spacing perfect. The "golden age" patina matches the patina I use on all the other brass parts of this banjo

Perfect fit

Bought to replace worn out tuners with crumbling plastic buttons on 30’s Regal archtop. After multiple measurements I ordered hoping they would fit. They matched exactly, slipped in place with even the screw holes lining up. They work great, smooth turning, and hold tune. 100% satisfaction.

Very nice tuners! Excellent look and feel.

I picked up these tuning machines in Relic Nickel to install on an old Goya a customer brought my way, whose original tuning machines had broken. These were not an exact match in every regard to the machines on the instrument, but I knew that in advance due to the dimensions given compared to my measurements of the originals. After all, these machines aren't "patterned after old Goya tuners" or anything.

These are real nice! They feel very good; I experienced no sloppiness or looseness that a couple other reviewers mentioned. Even not installed in the guitar, everything was tight, yet smooth. Once installed, the tuning action was shockingly smooth!

I've also picked up a nylon-post classical set of Golden Ages earlier, and the quality was just as good. I have to say, I'm very happy with Golden Age tuners; Finding replacement machines of these sorts can be difficult and oftentimes you are left choosing between bottom-of-the-barrel budget chinese import machines, ultra-expensive Alessi/Waverly machines, or scouring eBay/Reverb for units of dubious quality. The fact that these are new and unused, high-quality (not "premium-quality" so don't judge 'em by that standard), affordable enough for the average customer to not bat an eye, and are offered in finishes that look the part on old guitars with generous patina are quickly making them my favorite choices for the old "grandpa's budget beaters" that customers seem to frequently bring to be put back into service.

Golden Age tuners for slot head guitar

By

I bought these to replace the original ones on a pre-war SS Stewart. The buttons were bad, and the gears were slipping. The replacements look great and work well. One caveat: the screw holes didn't quite match up, possibly off by 1mm or so, but I was able to install, regardless. I'm strictly an amateur when it comes to repairs. A professional would have the correct tools. I would not hesitate to recommend to anyone, however. Thanks!

I purchased these machines for an early 1800s parlor guitar. The ones that were on it were garbage replacement tuners. The golden age really fit the bill. I’m very happy with them.
