Guitar Repair Vise

About This Item

The luthier's favorite vise is even easier to use, thanks to custom modifications: bearing-smooth operation, fast crank handwheel, and urethane/hardwood swivel jaws.

Custom modifications make it the best!
Don't mistake our vise for one of the many copycats! We've customized our Guitar Repair Vise to give it bearing-smooth operation that you won't find elsewhere. Turn the fast-crank handwheel and you'll immediately feel the difference.

Customized four ways:
1. Fast-crank handwheel with removable handle
2. Roller bearings for fast smooth opening/closing
3. Protective urethane surfaces on custom hardwood jaws
4. Nylon-core adjustable tension nuts control 360° jaw rotation

A good vise is the central hub of your workshop. Every repair or building job benefits from a solid, secure vise, and if it's actually a pleasure to use that's all the better!

Our Guitar Repair Vise is 32 pounds of steel that rotates full-circle to position the work for comfortable access. Each inch-thick hardwood jaw rotates too, with forgiving urethane surfaces to hold instruments of any shape/any size. This vise holds the tapered angles of a neck securely without needing any shims. Nylon-core adjustment nuts set the tension on the rotating jaws, so you can let them spin loosely or hold their angle. The vise jaws open to a maximum of 6" (15.24cm).

We've built in a roller bearing so the vise opens and adjusts smoothly - and added a crank handle to make it speedy. (The handle's conveniently removable, too.)

The sturdy base can be installed under your workbench for 8" vise height, or on top for 9-3/4" height. The threaded mounting rod and large wingnut mount the vise quickly on any benchtop up to 4-1/2" thick. Use a 11/16" bit to make a clean hole through your bench.

Another sub par product.

I'm not anti Chinese products. They can build anything as well as anyone. It's all up to the specs and price points. This is basically the same vice that Garrett Wade and Woodworkers sells. The jaws swivel base(s) are not machined well after being cast so having a bolt with a nut to snug doesn't work. It rotates until it hits a high point and then stops. So you have to have it sloppy loose move it to where you need it and the tighten. And while the jack screw to open and close it is smooth, the rails and guides it runs in are also loose and sloppy. The make them loose so they don't have to be close on their manufacturing tolerances. Sadly this seems to be the level of quality Stew Mac finds acceptable. Their fret vise was no better and the jaws don't come together evenly so pressure is not applied evenly. We expect this level or lack of quality from older Harbor Freight tools, but I expect better from Stew Mac. In this day of everything being driven by "price point", I would rather pay a bit more for a product I feel good about. Sadly I know production and machining and I know it wouldn't cost that much more to have built this better, but it is a world run by bean counters to make the most for CEO's and shareholders. Also you can look at the bearing between the wheel and the body on Dan's "shop" vise, they are not the same. Older model better build quality?

I saw Dan’s alternate version of installing the vise and it works great for me. I’m an authorized warranty technician for several large manufacturers and this setup simply makes the job easier for me.

Guitar Repair Vise

I've been putting off this purchase for a long time.

This vise always seemed like an extravagance; after all, there are always other more important purchases. So, I've made due with jigs, rigs and smaller less adaptable vises, and ended up spending far more in the long run on "cheap" solutions than I would have if I had just bought this vise to start.

The value of reducing my frustration, and the knowledge that I am finally holding valuable wood / or guitar assemblies securely far outweighs the cost of this "extravagance".

In the week since this arrived it has been in constant use. All those cheaper vices and home built jigs are gathering dust, or headed for the kindling pile or eBay.

Don't waste your time, thinking about it any longer.

BTW: This thing weighs a ton, the cost of shipping an item like this is probably close to 2 years of Stewmax Membership. Buy the membership, and get free shipping.

Extra pair of hands

By

I should have bought this vise many years ago. It's one of the best guitar building tools I have bought. It's like an extra pair of hands. The guitar stays firm in any position and I don't have to worry about it falling. It's genius.

I like this vise

After the purchase I found an identical vise at Woodworkers Warehouse. Slightly better quality and $20 cheaper. No padded jaws. A nice feature on the Stew Mac vise.

I have three different mounting locations in my shop simply because there are so many uses for this vise. Takes the same amount of time to mount something in the vise as it does to move the vise to another location.
