Guitar Repair Vise

About This Item

The luthier's favorite vise is even easier to use, thanks to custom modifications: bearing-smooth operation, fast crank handwheel, and urethane/hardwood swivel jaws.

Custom modifications make it the best!
Don't mistake our vise for one of the many copycats! We've customized our Guitar Repair Vise to give it bearing-smooth operation that you won't find elsewhere. Turn the fast-crank handwheel and you'll immediately feel the difference.

Customized four ways:
1. Fast-crank handwheel with removable handle
2. Roller bearings for fast smooth opening/closing
3. Protective urethane surfaces on custom hardwood jaws
4. Nylon-core adjustable tension nuts control 360° jaw rotation

A good vise is the central hub of your workshop. Every repair or building job benefits from a solid, secure vise, and if it's actually a pleasure to use that's all the better!

Our Guitar Repair Vise is 32 pounds of steel that rotates full-circle to position the work for comfortable access. Each inch-thick hardwood jaw rotates too, with forgiving urethane surfaces to hold instruments of any shape/any size. This vise holds the tapered angles of a neck securely without needing any shims. Nylon-core adjustment nuts set the tension on the rotating jaws, so you can let them spin loosely or hold their angle. The vise jaws open to a maximum of 6" (15.24cm).

We've built in a roller bearing so the vise opens and adjusts smoothly - and added a crank handle to make it speedy. (The handle's conveniently removable, too.)

The sturdy base can be installed under your workbench for 8" vise height, or on top for 9-3/4" height. The threaded mounting rod and large wingnut mount the vise quickly on any benchtop up to 4-1/2" thick. Use a 11/16" bit to make a clean hole through your bench.

Solid and Useful

I have seen this tool for years and always wondered if was worth the cost. To be honest, I wish I would have bought it sooner. It holds guitars securely and safely. The pivot feature is particularly nice in how it allows you to access both sides of the instrument. The repair vise works as advertised and has made my life easier around the shop. Full disclosure: the castings are a little rough and the paint is not well applied. These are not deal-breakers for me but others may be put off by them. The positives greatly outweigh the negatives andI highly recommend adding one of these to your workbench.

As an amateur builder I held off on this purchase for far too long. The vise is a great help and I wish that I had bought it earlier.

As expected

Please note this gun stock, or pattern maker's sculpting vice is a rather crudely made tool with over generous tolerances, little casting finishing work, and poor paint. However, it does work as intended. It will work better if overspray is cleaned from bearing surfaces before properly lubricating them. Excessive side play between the traveling jaw base, and lateral guides can be shimmed. I will try brass sheet applied to the lateral bearing surfaces of the jaw base.

Attaches nicely to portable work table

Great for uneven shapes (e.g. necks).
I wanted a second vise...because I do some of the dustier work in the garage or even outdoors. It fits nicely on my portable work tables...standard-sized work table holes fit the vise stem nicely with no drilling or alterations required.
I also added a wooden base...and routed out some slots in the wood to hold screws and other small parts and tools.

This is the 2nd one. I really love this vise.
If this vise can hold an uke body (around 8" or 9"), must be perfect!

Must Have in my shop!

For years, I used a "Parrot" vise in my shop because it was much cheaper than this repair vise, and I thought it was fine-UNTIL I received my Stew Mac repair vise. This thing is so much more versatile and easy to use. Don't let the cost scare you away. It is worth every penny and then some!
