Erlewine ShopStand

About This Item

More versatile than a workbench! Raise your work to the height you really want. The ShopStand adapts your jigs and vises to you, not the other way around.

Repairman Dan Erlewine envisioned a swiveling, tilting, height-adjustable workstand for better access to his repair work. Our tool development wizard Don MacRostie added his own vision of the stand, as an adjustable column to hold quick-change jigs and fixtures for instrument building. The Erlewine ShopStand was the result, and it immediately proved its worth.

Raise your work to the height you really want. The ShopStand adjusts from 28" to 36" in height. It adapts to you, not the other way around.

Get complete access to your work. The ShopStand is an industrial-grade, free-standing unit that bolts to your shop floor. It's heavy-duty and rock-steady. It rotates with ball-bearing smoothness to any position you need, and locks in place quickly and easily. You can move completely around the job in progress, for faster, easier access without reclamping.

Gain extra space in your shop. Your workbench uses lots of floor space; the ShopStand has a small footprint. You can interchange your jigs as needed, and hang them on the wall when the work's done.

Maximum height 36"
Minimum height 27", with ball bearing column rotation
Base size 10" x 10" (floor bolts required)
Top plate size 8" x 5" (drilled and tapped to fit our Guitar Repair Vise)

Erlewine ShopStand is the perfect support for many of our tools. The ShopStand and Guitar Repair Vise Set a sturdy, money-saving, 360-degree swiveling tool combo! We've customized our vise to give it bearing-smooth operation that you won't find elsewhere.

Nice for finish work!

I waited awhile before buying this. It was the old" I'll just make one syndrome". Finally just bought this one. Actually intended to use it for my neck carving jig, but it ended up in my finish room and it ain't going nowhere! Used it today for the first time. Light years better than holding bodies and necks for the last 40+ years! Allows you to really control what you are doing.

Very good and almost perfect

I was unable to thread the 4 bolts to the top or thread the ball bearing attachment bolt to the stand because the female threads on the stand had paint on them. Fortunately I have a tap and die kit and was able to re-tap the threads. First I deburred the holes as a precaution and then cleaned out the threads by re-tapping them. I didn’t mind doing this but I have to consider the fact that many, if not most, will not have a full tap & die kit at their disposal. The powder coat paint is well applied though. Perhaps having the manufacturer install temporary bolts prior to painting will ensure that the threads on the stand will remain clean and clear of paint. Otherwise I find the stand to be well made and I highly recommend it. I would have given the stand 5 stars if not for that issue.

Outstanding

Bought my first shop stand (with vise & work board) a couple of years ago. Meanwhile, my Erlewine neck jig has been awkward to use on a makeshift trestle.

Shop stand went on sale, & now I’m happy!

Great innovation. Thanks Dan.

Exactly what I was looking for!

I should start by saying that I'm actually not using this for guitar making but rather for knife making. Specifically, I got this to improve my set up for what is the bane of most knife makers' existence: hand sanding the blades. For those not familiar, this involves hours of standing and manually sanding through grits 120 through 1000+ and for years I've used a much less ergonomic combination of an awkward height workhorse with a clamp vise. After drilling the holes I promptly bolted the Erlewine ShopStand into the concrete floor of my shop using Hillman strike anchors and two things immediately became apparent: 1) The minscule footprint of this stand buys me some much-appreciated shop space and 2) it is FAR more solid than my old setup. I was initially apprehensive that the sanding motion would jiggle this around but on the contrary this simply does not move! This is a game changer in that I can feel my sanding strokes are much more efficient. Also, the height adjustment is a godsend on my back! It has three heights, one of which places my arms at the perfect position for standing. I haven't tried the lowest height but it appears this would be ideal for sitting.
Lastly, the ability to rotate is fantastic: light angle plays a big role in being able to see scratch marks (and a lack thereof) on the steel and this allows me to turn with the daylight/overhead light as needed.
I really can't say enough good things about how this product has met my needs. I know some other reviews have mentioned they don't love the plastic wheel but it hasn't been an issue at all for me. Thanks StewMac!

Pretty Cool so Far!

I purchased this to use with the stewmac angle vise and some jigs I made for my basement shop. After reading the instructions and looking at the anchor recommendations, I headed off to to Home Depot and didn't see 5/16" anchors so I went for the 3/8" RedHead brand 1-5/8" drop-ins. The holes on the mounting plate measured .540 so 3/8" seemed to still allow for some room. I did follow the recommendation and drill smaller bits to work my way up to 1/2" for the hole. I used an impact driver with a 3/16 and 1/4 hex mount bits which went quickly through the concrete and then used my buddy's industrial strength hammer drill for the 1/2" bit and came out with a clean hole. I installed the drop-in and loosely threaded a bolt in and marked and drilled the other holes with fit issues whatsoever. This tool setup worked pretty quickly, took about 45 minutes for 4 holes.

The construction was actually pretty sturdy, which I was nervous about given some of the reviews, but the base and supports are pretty thick and while there is some play between the two tubes it didn't vibrate noticeably when using my neck carving jig. The bearing machine/set screw lever is kinda too long and gets in the way when you rotate the stand 360, but I think I can figure out a cheap and easy alternative or just time the knob a bit so it doesn't catch the wheel adjuster. The rotation stop wheel adjuster is plastic but plenty sturdy and works well.

When using, adjustments were easy and I spent most of my time thinking about the work piece which is awesome. Vibration wasn't really noticeable, rotation was easy and the height I chose was comfortable. So far I only used it for carving a neck, but I will get a chance to put my homemade neck jig up do a crown and setup so we'll see what I see there, but so far it's been super nice.

So as far as the price goes, I didn't buy it a year ago when I wanted to because it seemed a bit much, but when I really looked at what was out there for alternatives I was probably headed towards making one and borrowing a welder. When I put all that together time and materials wise it didn't make a lot of sense since I don't have any scrap material and the time sink would be pretty substantial. In the end I'm glad a got it.

Versatile and sturdy - perfect for the smaller shop

I work in a small space and this stand is perfect for me. I made various platforms that can be mounted on it using either the tilting drill press vice or the guitar repair vice bolted to the stand. The ability to spin your work when e.g. carving braces and being able to raise or lower your work to the ideal height has saved me no end of back pain!

It's also great for mounting the buffing wheel on and being able to turn it to the perfect angle has saved lots of potential mishaps. Yes, there is a very slight 'wobble' when the wheel is spinning, but if you get the buffer nicely balanced, it's minimal.

I have been enjoying the workshop stand. Saves a lot of space in the shop. Will be getting another one but just for the neckjig.

Disapointed - Poor quality

I waited ages for this product to be in stock.
When it finally arrived, it did not rotate properly.
I was sent another stand.
I bolted the stand to the floor joists then bolted a work bench to it.
The bearing lever did not clear the height adjustment wheel so I had to add a washer to the wheel. Also the wheel required a lot of effort to secure the pole from spinning.
When sanding or even cleaning a fretboard it picks up a wobbling momentum with the least amount of effort.
I think the quality control needs to be looked at.
It’s disappointing because this is a great concept but in practice it's not quite there.
To Stew Macs credit, they offered me a refund or credit.
I can never complain about their excellent service and positive attitude when dealing with a problem.
