Precision Straightedges

About This Item

For accurate fretting and neck evaluation.
We make our Precision Straightedges specifically for checking neck straightness and relief, evaluating truss rod adjustments, and pinpointing high or low frets. Available in four lengths, for working on any fretted instrument, from mandolins to guitars to basses.

The narrow beveled edge allows easy and accurate viewing of the gap between the edge and the surface being checked. Made of ultra-high-grade stainless steel with a satin finish, each straightedge is precision-machined for accuracy to ±.0015" per foot. These straightedges are also ideal for laying out projects on wood or paper, and for setting up table saws, jointers, and other shop equipment.

Made in the USA of German/Austrian stainless steel. You won't find this level of quality with cheap knockoffs!
Each of our straightedges go through a rigorous 13-step manufacturing process that guarantees accuracy. These straightedges are extremely precise, heavy duty, and designed to handle a lifetime of use in your shop. Before each one gets shipped, it's personally inspected before leaving the factory.

Our Precision Straightedges won't bend or dent as easily as some aluminum straightedges on the market. The satin finish allows you to mark it with a pencil in order to make notes or to compare one guitar’s setup to another.

  • Guaranteed accuracy to +/- .0015" per foot
  • 0.090" thick 420 German/Austrian surgical stainless steel (2.286mm)
  • Hardened and tempered for lasting accuracy
  • Individually inspected to ensure precise tolerances
  • Proudly made in Ohio, USA
#3850 18" Precision Straightedge is part of our Basic Setup Kit.

For acoustic guitars, our Neck Set Gauge is designed to attach to the #3799 24" Precision Straightedge.

It makes all the difference

You can uses the strings to check the neck, but until you use one of these straight edges you won't know how much difference they can make; if you have adjustable neck, then these straight edges will make adjusting more understandable and easier...

Used to set-up my new Martin D-41. Now it plays as good as it looks and sounds. Love Stew-Mac.

Improved version.

Just got the latest version of this straight edge. It thicker and heavier than the previous version, which was fine, but I prefer the extra weight. Accurate as ever. A must for any serious set-up.

I have a 12, an 18, and a 24". I thought they'd be useful…but I've come to rely on them ALL THE TIME. Analysis tools are so important.

Must have for any woodworker!

By

This is not only must have for musical instrument maker, but also essential requirement for any woodworker. Very precision made, but longer one tends to be little flexible. Functionally, there is no problem but if it can maintain the weight and gain stiffness then it will be just perfect! Although I still give 5 star as i cannot be sure if it will be actually better if it is stiffer!

I have been using all the different lengths for years now, and have come to depend on these tools as a benchmark to check other "cheaper" straight edges. I will sometimes take one of the longer sized units to the hardware store and check other tools such as carpenters squares, drafting T bevels and such, to pick the straightest piece to buy, and use those for everyday use and I won't care if I ding or bang it up as I can just replace it with another cheap straight edge, and keep the Stew Mac versions stashed away, out of harms way, as I am old and clumsy!

Excellent quality

After purchasing 24" straightedge I checked it with expensive, industrial straightedge - Stewmac`s one is dead straght, as expected. Superior quality, will long for lifetime.
