Nut Slotting Gauge

About This Item

A revolution in guitar setup! Precisely measures string heights, so you can cut accurate nut slots for consistent playability.

Now you can upgrade! Get a digital indicator for your current gauge for even faster and more precise measurements. We also have the Digital Nut Slotting Gauge with the digital indicator already included.

This device will revolutionize the way you set up a guitar.
The Nut Slotting Gauge quickly and precisely measures string heights over the first fret. When filing nut slot depths, you see your results more accurately than ever before. No more guesswork or "eyeballing" the string heights, and no more searching for elusive combinations of feeler gauges. You can custom-tailor the playability with consistent, repeatable results.

At last! A precision tool for establishing string heights!

The Nut Slotting Gauge was designed by Don MacRostie here in our R & D shop. It features an easy to read dial indicator with adjustable zero point, and it's super accurate to .001". The machined brass base fits over the strings to rest on the fingerboard, and it works with most acoustic and electric guitars, mandolins and banjos. A larger brass base is machined to fit bass string spacings. Both have gently arched bottoms to follow most any fretboard radius. Instructions are included.

Putting the new Nut Slotting Gauge to work on a "burn victim" guitar

Dan Erlewine shows a before and after of a 1958 Gibson that's (barely) survived a house fire. It needs a new nut, and he's using the Nut Slotting Gauge to get it right the first time.

The most accurate reading you can get

Twenty years ago my teacher told me to press at the 2nd fret, then you want to see "about this much" play to the first fret. I eventually became consistent, but when I went to teach an employee, I wasn't satisfied with trying to relate a visual reference, and feeler gauges often played tricks on the eyes depending on how they were held, the light behind it, etc.
This guy is great for eliminating the guess work from the equation. Pays for itself with one new nut repair. We use it in production and there's no more revisiting slot depth on final inspection.

Speed up your nut setup

This little gauge helps to make the initial assessment of a guitar nut and cut the string slots accurately. I use it all the time. They should make it available in metrics, that’s why I removed one star.

Works on nylon too, but only at the 1st fret.

I've used this at the first fret on a number of nylon string guitars, and it has worked well. It is not appropriate at the 12th fret, however, because the weight of the plunger, although minimal, pushes the string down toward the fret. So at the 12th fret, I switch to a string action gauge/ruler. It is a precision instrument, so keep it in a container that seals out dust. That will help to assure that the plunger moves freely.

Hasn't worked for us in the long-term.

This tool would be amazing if it didn't have a longevity issue.

So far, we've burned through three in my shop in the last 4 months. First gauge was sticky and wouldn't return to zero or fall consistently when the string was pressed. Second gauge had the indicator arrow on the face of the gauge become loose and fall constantly from the pull of gravity alone- never getting an accurate reading. I was able to get a replacement from Stewmac for that gauge, and the new one is basically unusable because the plunger sticks constantly- once again having issues falling when the string is pressed and returning to the zero point. We have no idea how high strings are sitting over the first fret, so we've moved back to the old-school eyeball method.

The idea behind the tool is great. I have had one gauge work for 2 months, which was the longest run. I wouldn't say "don't buy this tool," but I'd warn you that you may be wasting money due to faulty gauges. I'm going to try and buy a replacement gauge and see if I can remove the spring to make it work with the brass base.

It works much better for me than a ruler for certain measurements

By

I needed something to help me see the bottom of the string to fret height and especially the nut to first fret string height.
Since my eyesight is not that good, it makes this measurement a whole lot easier
