StewMac Fret Tang Nipper

About This Item

Improved design: one tool fits all fret sizes!
Our Fret Tang Nipper undercuts fretwire, fast and easy. Speeds fret jobs on bound necks, and helps save the lacquer finish at the edges of unbound fretboards.

Bill Collings (of Collings Guitars) inspired this clever tool for undercutting fretwire to fit over neck bindings. Insert the fretwire to the desired depth in the guide notch, squeeze the handle, and the wire is quickly and cleanly undercut—no bending or crimping.

For unbound fingerboards, too: try nipping the fret tang to length before installing the fret. Now you'll only need to cut and file the overhanging crown, and the fret will be less likely to twist and unseat.

    A repair shop favorite!
  • Hardened-steel cuts clean and stays sharp
  • Rubber-coated handle for a comfortable, non-slip grip
  • Tool is 7-3/4" long (197mm)

Comes with interchangeable tables for various widths of fretwire:
Medium table for widths 0.075" to 0.095" (1.90mm to 2.41mm)
Large table for widths 0.095" to 0.110" (2.41mm to 2.79mm)

Not recommended for use with stainless-steel fretwire.

Works well

Makes a nice clean cut on the fret tang. I had been filing these off by hand. Definitely a time saver. There is a little bit of trial and error but once you get the hang of it it works well.

Simply not good enough.

Expensive everywhere, not just StewMac, yet almost completely useless. It nips the fret tangs, leaving the fret itself marred with very rough edges left where much of the tangs still remain. Tried many techniques, using both inserts, but without much success. Learned the following: There is no shortcut to a carefully wielded Dremel and some files!

Does a surprisingly good job of nipping the tang. Have used the SM fret cutter (looks like a pliers) which does a reasonable job on tangs but not as good is this device. Have also tried using a dremel with a jig and this is far better. If you're careful a minor or no cleanup with a file is needed.

Works great!

Works great, cuts clean and takes very little effort to use. All three of those points do not apply to any of my previous methods, I'm glad I finally picked one of these up

A useful tool

I just got these the other day and used it on some "gold" fretwire. They supply you with two anvils and the large worked well. With a short learning curve I was achieving excellent results. A tool is inherently good or useless, but in either case cannot think for you or magically impart skill. Thus far the tool is good and I've learned to use it. If it holds up I will continue to do so. It proved a significant time saver.

Tool works well but there is a learning curve. Practice in wire to find the little tricks. Works best for me to nibble only on the end of cut frets. Once mastered. it completely out shines cut off wheels in Dremel.

Didn't quite worked like I'd hoped

Maybe I just needed a little more practice but I found that the fret-wire wanted to spin or move as attempted to snip it. Also, if you had a miss, it was difficult to re-clip. That said, if you want to set fret-wire on a finger board that has binding, this is an absolute must. Just wish it did a cleaner job.
