Fret/Fingerboard Leveling Files

About This Item

These custom-made files give you a handle on your fret work!

These files work quickly to level frets or fingerboards, leaving a smooth finish.

Each file is 1" wide with a comfortable hardwood handle. The 6" length is for general use, and the 3" length is for spot leveling.

The fret leveling files have single-cut teeth with a steeper angle to eliminate "chatter." They cut faster and smoother than most fret leveling files we've used, they work quickly, and they're great for dressing and beveling fret ends.

The fingerboard leveler is a double-cut file for ebony, rosewood and pearl inlays. Despite its rough appearance, it leaves a smooth finish.

Essential for Fretting
This item is 1 of the 7 tools included in our Essential Fretting Tool Set, a compilation of tools you'll need for the fundamentals of fret work. The set also includes our book, Fret Work Step-By-Step by Erick Coleman with Dan Erlewine.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire*. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.
*Excludes our original Fret Tang Nippers. We recommend our Deluxe Fret Tang Nippers for stainless-steel fretwire.

Made quick work of the sprouts! Light, even pressure. Go slow, be careful and it works amazing! Also leveled a high(er) fret I found with the rocker. Use the fret finishing kit to get great, smooth fret-ends and frets!

Luthier’s Leveling Dream

By

I bought this fret leveling file to try and make easier work and get better results leveling frets...easily one of the best decisions I’ve made as regards Luthier tools...when I started out I was trying to use hardware store quality files which work well for general purpose filing and found out the hard way not so much for guitar work...I’ve bought a couple of tools from stewmac now and it’s been money well spent...do yourself a favor gang...it might cost a little bit more in the beginning to buy the right tool but it will save you both time and money in the long run. THANKS STEWMAC !!!

A great file for the job and the price was not overboard.

It works even though it’s small. It cuts quick and fine. And doesn’t cost big bucks. I like the wood handle too. I was using a flat bastard file which works good but it had no handle.

Outstanding file for all around use !

I bought this file primarily due to several very positive videos on dressing fret ends. While advertised as a leveling file, I bought it mainly for dealing with very sharp fret ends on a Japan-issued Fender Jaguar (of 2006 vintage) that had significant shrinkage of the maple neck. This file, along with the Stew Mac concave file (for medium fret ends) made easy work of dressing down the sharp edges. BE VERY careful in using ANY file, and make sure you protect wood and bound surfaces with tape prior to filing. The handle shape makes this file very easy to control, and gives you superb comfort and a solid grip, as well. Highly recommended, and well worth the cost.

Perfect tool for the job!

I found and marked the hi frets using a steel rule and a dry erase pen. Gently hit the high spotsuntil light contact on the surrounding frets then finished with the rounding file. Now a 400 dollar guitar plays like a 4000 dollar gibby!
