Freehand Holder

About This Item

Spray a better finish with less work! Our versatile guitar body holder makes spray finishing easier and more efficient.

How do you hold a guitar body to spray a finish? Hang it on a ceiling hook and weave around it while you trip over your spray hose? Fasten it to a stick and hold it up until your arm cramps? Prop it up and hope it doesn't fall over when you bump your worktable?

The unique Freehand Holder is our new solution. It's an easier way to hold a body or neck securely, for a more uniform finish.

Freehand Holder includes:
• Sturdy steel frame
• Rotating handwheel shaft
• One solidbody attachment
• One acoustic attachment

Clamp the sturdy steel frame into your vise and fasten the guitar body or neck to the rotating handwheel shaft. Attachments for solidbody and acoustic neck joints are included. Now simply turn the wheel as you spray. The body moves to you, not the other way around, for easy, uniform spray coverage. A smoother finish means you'll save time and effort at the sanding stage, too.

The wheel has Allen-adjustable resistance. To switch bodies quickly for production finishing, extra body attachments are available separately—you can spray one while another dries.

You'll probably discover other work-saving uses for the Freehand Holder, we'd love to hear about it!

Good idea, not so good execution

This sounds like a great idea, and I suppose it works, hence three stars. Tempting to go to 2. But the quality on this is marginal, not up to StewMacs usual standards. I have a lot of StewMac tools, and generally love them and find them very useful. The concept of this sold me, but the photos made me leery. Shoulda trusted my gut.

First, the "adjustment screws" were painted over and it took alot of force to get them to break loose, and then there is no real tension adjustment at all. It certainly can't be made to stand still, so the guitar will rotate out of position unless you hold it in place the entire time. Defeat the purpose to a degree. It should allow easy movement and easy locking and unlocking of the mechanism, so you can rotate when you need to and lock it in place and work with two hands
when you need to. Very poor quality control.

The mounting of the frame to whatever vise or table is made of flimsy compressible plastic, so I doubt it's longevity.

There are no instructions. Not that it's that complicated, but it would be nice to know what the designer had in mind, especially when things aren't working as expected - see above.

Finally, and this may just be me, the part that holds a solid body has four holes that line up to the holes in a Fender. Sounds great, right? What goes on the other side? You know, the back of the guitar. They don't show you that in the pictures or the videos, and no instructions. So you have a choice. You insert a bolt through it and use a nut? That will leave gaps or marks in the finish on the back. Use a wood screw to go in partially and you've damaged or widened the bolt hole. The holes are fine for a neck however, as long as one is careful with screw sizes, and I suppose if one is only doing repairs on another part of the body, one can attach a spare neck plate and it won't matter. But if you are painting the entire body of a new guitar (which is what I do), it's not clear how to succeed. What I'd prefer is a somewhat larger head that has off line holes - I usually install painting/finishes necks with three wood screws out of the way of the standard four hole pattern, so that the finish is consistent up to the bolt holes . I then clean up and put dowels in the screw holes to make them solid again, and the bolt holes are pristine. Again, that may just be me, but this is a annoyance.

I'll likely keep it and try to figure out how to make it work, but unlike my other many purchases, this one will likely never reach the level of "wish I'd had this long ago".

inferior quality

I have always considered Stewmac tools to be high quality--Some items seemed to be a little pricey but still good quality. When I opened the box on my new guitar holder I was very disappointed. I could smell fresh black paint that slightly rubbed off on my hands, the welds were sloppy, the tab that screws to the neck pocket of solid body guitars wasn't flat----and I paid $110.00 dollars for this thing? I'm not saying this tool won't work well....but come on Stewmac...$25.00 would be a fair price--Again, I probably won't go through the trouble of sending it back...I'm just very disappointed with the price and quality--

Very Handy

I have found these the absolute best way to mount an acoustic. I would give it five stars if it would fit all body types. For smaller bodies, such as parlor bodies, one end needs to be ground down to make it narrower to fit the pocket.

This is helping me out so much!

I made a little spray booth out of a wardrobe moving box, plastic drop cloth, clamps, and some gorilla duct tape. I have a round block of wood with a vise screwed into it and then the Freehand Holder clamped into the vise. The whole thing is held up by a small, round footstool. With the round block of wood on top of the footstool, I can spin the guitar horizontally with ease while spraying. The arm with the 4 neck screws holds the guitar PERFECTLY, and the round knob on the end makes it easy to rotate the guitar vertically as well - the movement is very smooth, which makes for fewer over-spray mistakes.

Must have tool for guitar finishing

By

The Freehand Holder is solid and holds the guitar at good angles to go a rotisserie type finish. Results are better and the process is easier than holding by hand or suspending from a rod or wire. I would suggest that StewMac offer an adapter for acoustic dovetails. You cannot use the acoustic attachment without making a block to put in the dovetail or else reshaping the acoustic attachment and screwing it down into the dovetail. I’d also recommend having two of the plastic blocks for clamping the arm into a workmate bench versus the one that it comes with for clamping into a vise. Both of these design oversights require workarounds. Other than that it would be a 5 star review.
