3M Scotch-Brite Pads

About This Item

Long lasting, and more durable than steel wool
Use 3M Scotch-Brite Pads for cleaning and deburring metal parts or scuff-sanding a finish. Great for waterbased finishes. Will never rust.

For cleaning, polishing, and refinishing
Reusable Scotch-Briteā„¢ pads have many uses in the shop. They're durable, washable, and won't shed the way steel wool does. This means no surprise rust specks in a waterbased finish, and no pesky metal particles that stick to your pickup magnets.

We picked the 3 pads we use the most in our shop:

    #7447 General Purpose Pad, maroon
  • Ideal for scuff-sanding between finish coats and removing polyester finishes with a chemical stripper
  • Similar to grade 1 steel wool
  • 360-400 grit aluminum oxide abrasive
    #7448 Ultra Fine Pad, gray
  • The last step to a flawless finish
  • Useful for de-glossing a sticky neck
  • Similar to grade 00 steel wool
  • 2000-2500-grit silicon carbide abrasive
    #7445 Light Duty Pad, white
  • Lasts longer than steel wool and doesn't shed
  • Cleans and polishes hardware and frets
  • Similar to grade 0000 steel wool
  • Super-fine 2500-grit aluminum silicate abrasive

Each reusable pad is 6" x 9" x 0.250" (152mm x 229mm x 6mm).

Use in pace of steel wool around pickups!

Previously, I had been taping off the pickups while cleaning fret boards and polishing frets with Steel wool. This does a great job and no need to tape over the pickups. Also, really good for touching up and smoothing out minor scratches. Lasts a long time, too.

Ditch the Steel wool

Using this to clean the frets instead of steel wool. Super clean. No worries about the pickups being damaged. 100% recommended.

Just so handy

I found myself using these pads in so many jobs. Great for scuffing, fret polishing, and, in combination with some turmeric, giving modern speed knobs that lived-in look!

Great for constant guitar cleaning

I personally am really bothered by all the varnish on the back of the neck on some of my guitars. Just like a fine pool cue, I like the neck to slide through the hand with no sticky sections! These pads are perfect for this. I was using fine steel wool, but, it's pretty messy.
Mush better with the pads.

Good if you know what you are doing.

No one ever said these were the equivalent of steel wool.
They CAN be used instead.
The people that don't understand that shouldn't be working on guitars.
They are tools.
They work well, if you know how to use them.

Great for deglossing, scuff sanding, repair sanding, level sanding with a block, some stripping, and general cleanup.

I am not sure how you can get all flustered and leave a bad review over a scrubbing pad.
Not just for dishes and greasy things. That is a preposterous claim.

Different from steel wool

We use these 3M pads in the shop where I work part-time. The shop owner has become a convert, but I still greatly prefer steel wool for fret polishing for its feel and effectiveness (although I agree that it's messy). Interestingly, the hardware store 0000-labeled steel wool that we have gotten lately is quite a bit coarser than the 0000 steel wool that StewMac sells, which is much better, IMHO.

I wanted to try these so added them to an order to justify the cost of shipping. Otherwise, I see them in hardware stores so better most times to buy them there.

This is one of those things that you'll find many uses for once you have it in your drawer.
