Luthier's Featherweight Digital Caliper

About This Item

A shop favorite, now more affordable than ever!
Our Luthier's Featherweight Digital Caliper is the perfect first step to doing better, more precise work.

Great for apprentices and for travel
By machining this caliper out of ultra-durable resin instead of metal, we've made a tool that is perfect for apprentices, students, or your traveling toolkit. It offers the same precision of our original Luthier's Digital Caliper—at about half the weight.

Customized for fretwork!
We added a custom jaw notch for accurately measuring fretwire crown height (the height above the fretboard). This is essential for comparing new wire to original wire. And thanks to a great idea by repairman Frank Ford, we've also added a notch on the depth gauge to measure fret height on the instrument—a real time saver.

Handy for lots of other measuring jobs in the shop—nuts, saddles, tuners, tool setups and more. Featuring LCD digital readouts in inches and millimeters. It measures outside, inside and depth dimensions up to 6" (154mm), with super-accurate 0.0005" (0.01mm) resolution.

    Features:
  • Made of ultra-durable resin for lighter weight
  • Measures fret height before AND after fret installation
  • Accurate readouts in inches and millimeters
  • Accurate 0.0005" (0.01mm) resolution
  • Measures outside, inside, and depth dimensions
  • CR2032 battery included

These calipers are perfect for light jobs and quick measurements. Need something heavier duty? Our original Luthier's Digital Caliper is made from stainless steel and has extra features for a lifetime of use in a busy shop. The extra versatility and precision have kept them on pro benches for years.

digital caliper...the less expensive one

By

Verified Buyer

Bought this so I wouldn't have to 'modify' my more expensive caliper...and probably screw it up. The step and crown measuring capability is what I was looking for. A thinner step that would fit in a fret slot to measure tang depth would be great...maybe someone will get to that later. Stew mac has always been great...with parts, tools, etc. and advice. Thanks guys.

Glad I Bought It

The price doesn't equal the quality. This caliper doesn't feel as good as one of (higher?) quality but: it works perfectly it's just as accurate as my Sxxxxxxt. It is an extremely good buy and one I wouldn't hesitate to make again.

I'm gathering the tools for an acoustic guitar build and this digital caliper is an excellent addition to my shop.

Lightweight Digital Calipers

Exactly what I wanted and expected. They are not heavy duty and you will need to be careful with them but if you are, they should last a lifetime. Comes with a nice plastic case and a spare battery. Can't beat that!

Try this tool!

I bought this to supplement my mechanical verniers that have a traditional dial readout. I figured it
al was worth $15 to see what this could do. I was amazed at how accurate it is! Very nice to have the window for exact measurments. The only problem is the light case for the calipers is very flexible and easily touches the on button, leaving the caliper in that state until opened and manually turning it off. A small problem that does not take away from a nice, low priced tool. Worth the price any day of the week.

The idea of a caliper for guitar is excellent

But this tool's quality isn't there. It is mostly plastic and has plenty of play, so the readings aren't consistent. If you want a "general" idea what the measurement is, I suppose this will do.

If you want to measure the gauge of strings, or measuring for fine precision this won't do. I gave it 2 stars from 1, because it's $15 bucks.

I tried using them the other day on one of my Guitars and wasn't happy with the results, very clumsy and inaccurate.

Excellent value; Serviceable for equipping staff

I ordered about 15 of these to equip a fleet of guitar technicians, and they seem to work very well. They are not the best-of-the-best as far as calipers go, nor are they meant to be; Readings can be skewed with varying pressure so diligence is required for precision, but as far as general measurement goes they work very well. They have all the luthier-specific mods to usual calipers that StewMac has enshrined in their more expensive calipers, which is what makes these really nice for the price. The main thing I do not like about these: they have an auto-on function, which turns the caliper display on whenever it senses a movement of the jaws. It's not as sensitive as some calipers I've seen, but this sensitivity varies across the lot I purchased, and if these did not have that feature then I would rate them a solid 5-stars for their purpose.
