PEAKMETER Digital Multimeter

About This Item

The last multimeter you'll ever buy!
When getting deep into guitar and amp repair, it is hard to determine what specs you really need to know. Vintage guitars, amps, and pedals have so many parts that differ from the "correct" listed specs, simply replacing parts can change your tone unexpectedly.

Serious about building and repairing pickups, pedals, and amps? Having an accurate multimeter to get the job done right is essential.

You need to know the precise values of your components. Component drift in small parts like capacitors and potentiometers have a big impact on your sound. We have two new multimeters that solve all the problems you'll face, and have features that will keep these meters on your desk and in your gig bag for years. It's a must-have for custom wiring jobs, pickup making, finding bad connections and testing components.

Essential for guitar and amp building and repair
There are two models to fit your needs. The compact PM16B model is sized to fit in a case or gig bag and auto ranging for simple operation. The larger PM19C has more sensitive test ranges, and can handle all the voltages you'll face when working on amps. Each model includes 21" long heavy duty 10 amp probes.

Simple to use, accurate results

These meters can do all the essential tests you'll need:
  • Function and ohm resistance of control pots and pickups
  • Status of diodes in amps and effects
  • Mapping out lug functions
  • Circuit continuity
  • Testing guitar cables for function
  • Testing batteries
    These meters can measure:
  • AC/DC voltage
  • Diodes testing
  • Temperature (PM19C model)
  • Volts
  • Amps
  • Hertz
  • Farads (to measure capacitance)
    Bonus! Thoughtful additional features:
  • Flashlight and backlit display for dark stages
  • Stand to see the meter easily while working
    PM16B Stats—perfect for guitar work
  • Volts DC: 600m/6/60/600
  • Volts AC: 6/60/600
  • Ohms: 600/6k/60k/6m/60m/10A
  • Diode test: 1mA/3.2V
    PM19C Stats—perfect for amp building
  • Volts DC: 600m/6/60/600/1000
  • Volts AC: 6/60/600/750
  • Ohms: 600/6k/60k/600K/6m/60m
  • Diode test: 1mA/3.2V

Get the right meter for all of your building and repair needs!

Bought this for a bass build I'm working on and having some wiring/pickup issues. This device assisted in tracking down the problem. Glad I purchased this.

just what I needed

It's just the right size for my bench, beats the big one from the home improvement store I had been using. I like the fold out stand on the back too! Thanks StewMac for making it convenient to get.

A good solid useful tool. Large readout, stands by itself, does all the things you want it to and even has a flash light on the back. Annnnnnd it's inexpensive.

So far, it holds up to my Fluke!

I bought this when my trusty old RadioShack digital multimeter gave up the ghost. After shopping around for inexpensive options, I found that many multimeters won't measure capacitance (which happens to be important for amp work). StewMac appeared to have what I needed, but I started second-guessing myself after purchasing it, so I immediately went and bought a Fluke 15B+ just to be safe.

While everyone knows Fluke to be a professional standard, it is very pricey by comparison. This particular model has simple features and is easy to use, but this review isn't about the Fluke, is it?

StewMac's offering is this PEAKMETER Digital Multimeter (I got the PM19C), which seems to be designed to work within a wide range of specifications that far exceed anything most guitar and amp techs will ever need. It is solidly built and worked well alongside the Fluke while biasing a Twin Reverb. If anything, the PEAKMETER tracked minute fluctuations in the current a little more than the Fluke did.

My only complaint is that if I'm measuring resistance, I have to change the dial between checking a 470-ohm resistor then a 220K resistor...not a big deal, just an inconvenience when I suddenly think there's an open load. Same goes for measuring voltage and having to change settings between 6.3VDC and 500VDC (and you really don't want to F-up there!)

Anyway, for the money, it's a good unit. I'd buy it again if I needed another.

Practical Speaker and Pick Up Resistance

By

Verified Buyer

After speaking to customer service, I determined that I needed the PM19C to read speaker and guitar pick up ohm resistance. The instructions were not helpful, but after putting both lines on the right side and selecting 60k under Ohms, it works like a champ. Steady and accurate. Couldn't be happier. Highly recommend for active guitarist.

Love my new multimeter !

I have a good multimeter, and I've been using it since July of 1968. It's analog, has a pointer guage. Cost over $100, back in the 60s.
I've used it for everything. But it's slow and you really have to look close to get readings. Small
indicator numbers and marks.
Well this last winter, I built a Tweed Deluxe amp, and I wanted a new meter for this project.
Digital, with big numbers ! ( I'll be 70 next year !) Boy, am I glad that I picked this one. Everything
I needed and more ! And only $30 !!! These meters can cost a lot. This is a great price and it
works very well for me . Happy Amp Builder !! JW

A Great Tool

This multimeter is super substantial and clear to read. It’s flexible contacts (one can remove the end covers to expose more contact area) make it fit a number of applications from guitar work to more sophisticated electronics. One addition I would have liked is a better guitar-specific tutorial for this particular model, as the numerical settings are different from an older meter I have and what I could find online. Other than that, this was a terrific offering from Stewmac and certainly worth the extra two week wait.

Nice unit, Solid

By

Verified Buyer

"I don't do much with electronics. I buy cheap guitars and replace the pots, switches and pickups. This meter seems solid and it has a nice loud continuity tone. I have the PM16B unit. I have Dan's "How to Wire a Gibson" DVD. Wish I had all this stuff BEFORE I wired my guitars but hey, things will be better.

There is a hinged leg on the back that lets you stand it up so you can see it easily.

The manual is small and hard to read. Most of you are probably beyond that but for some it would be nice to have a PDF version of the manual. I scanned my manual and uploaded it to manualslib (dot) com Go to the manualslib website use their search. Just put in PM16B, it will come right up.

Here's a handy piece of information for you, if you click off this review box, it will disappear and you get to start all over again.
