Batt-O-Meter

About This Item

The smart battery tester for musicians. Stop worrying about running out of juice.

When your performance depends on good batteries—or if you repair guitars—the Batt-O-Meter is a must-have in your gig bag or on your workbench!

The Batt-O-Meter not only indicates the percentage of life left in an uninstalled 9-volt, AA or AAA battery, but better yet, its smart circuitry works for installed batteries, too! Plug it into a pedal, effects box or active guitar: it measures the power being pulled from the battery, compares that load to the battery's remaining energy, and calculates the remaining hours of battery life.

Use it before you go on stage and stop worrying about running out of juice during your performance. It's a must for troubleshooting in the shop, too. Save time by checking battery life before you take things apart!

• Ends guesswork about battery replacement
• Saves you money—buy fewer batteries and get more life out of them
• Helps the environment—minimizes discarded batteries
• Fast, accurate and easy to use
• Compact—fits easily into a guitar case or tool box.

The Batt-O-Meter is switchable for alkaline, rechargeable and carbon zinc batteries. It's designed for circuits powered by a single battery (highest testable voltage is 10.23-volts), and includes a 1/4" test plug.

Note: The Batt-O-Meter will work with normal "negative ground" circuits, but will not work with "positive ground" pedals. If the black wire from the battery connects to ground (on the circuit board or jack), it's negative ground and the Batt-O-Meter will work.

The lighted display indicates battery type, voltage, percentage of battery life, hours remaining of normal use, and low battery status.

The Batt-O-Meter is powered by its own 9-volt battery (not included) with self-test function.

I love it, if it would work on both of my bases

Hi, I own a Sadowsky active 5 string, and an active American Fender jazz bass.
The Batt-O-Meter works perfect on the Sadowsky, but not at all on my Fender Jazz bass.
I have to remove the batteries from the Fender and test them on the side of Batt-O-Meter.
Is there a way to convert my bass so the meter will function as it should. My Fender uses 2 nine volt batteries but I don’t know if they are in series or parallel. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks; Daniel

Response from StewMac

Hi Daniel,

Thank you for sharing your honest feedback with us, we genuinely appreciate that. We are sorry to hear that the Batt-O-Meter did not work for you as expected. We had our technicians touch base with the manufacturer and they found out that while the Batt-O-Meter works on many devices, there are some that just don't work. The Batt-O-Meter has to place a load on the device in order to properly test it. Since not all devices are wired the same, this may behave differently between devices — resulting in some working and others not. One thing to try when getting a PL6 or SLF error notice is to pull the Batt-O-Meter plug out just a little bit (so it's only partially inserted) and see if it works. If that does not work then the only other option is to remove the battery from the device and test it that way.

At StewMac, we offer a 100% customer satisfaction guarantee. If any of our products fail to meet your expectations, you are welcome to send it back for a refund, exchange, or store credit. Just send us an email at service@stewmac.com or contact us through our website and we will take care of this for you immediately. Thank you again for this excellent feedback. We look forward to hearing from you.

Good when it works

I've started playing church gigs with a Taylor 314c and had a battery die during practice. I bought this with a promo coupon to keep it in my guitar bag and unfortunately, it doesn't even work with the guitar I bought it for because the polarity is reversed. There's no switch or extra pigtail to even give me the option of using it in the guitar. I tried it in a couple pedals and it works fine there. Looks like I'll be opening it up to modify it like others have reported doing. Hopefully future designs will incorporate this.

A needed, excellent piece of diagnostic gear

Keith McMillan's gear has always been of high quality - so I was not surprised to find that this piece was really worth the money spent on it -- what a great idea -- a battery testing tool that can test within a stomp box or an active preamp WITHIN the instrument without having to unbox the battery.

Perfect.

Poor design - One Trick Pony

While functional, this device needed a simple switch to change the polarity of the connector allowing it to work on most of my guitars. I do not like the tip they put on the 1/4" connector which requires me to "partially pull out" the connector to get a voltage reading on my Ibanez Bass.

As I purchased this with end of year gift money from StewMac, I chose to open it up (the circuit board was designed in 2009) and modify it. I added a second pigtail with reverse polarity on the TRS (tip, ring sleeve) 1/4" connector and now have something usable.

Works as it is supposed to. I don't end up using it all that often, but when I need it - it is a handy device.

Not all it's cracked up to be.

I purchased the batt-o-meter thinking what a great idea. Upon receiving it I checked a battery in my guitar with active electronics. The meter displayed 100% but it didn't show how many hours were left. I thought that odd but was ready for rehearsal so I figured I'd check it later. As we started playing within a half hour my battery died!

Later I checked a battery in another guitar that has been installed for several months. Again I got the 100% and no hours displayed. I contacted Stew-Mac thinking I might have a defective unit. They promptly sent another and upon testing the device I got the same results.

This is a great idea and if it worked I would keep it but if I can't rely on it and a battery fails during a performance I'm sunk. I gave it one star for the sheer ingenuousness of the device but otherwise it doesn't meet my needs.
