StewMac Neck Shims for Bass

About This Item

Tapered maple shims used to change the angle of a bolt-on neck.

To change the angle of a bolt-on neck, players and repair shops have used shims for years. We've seen everything from matchbook covers to guitar picks stuck in neck joints.

Those kinds of shims create an unwanted gap under the heel of the neck: a dead air space where humidity condenses to swell the wood. As Dan Erlewine describes in his Guitar Player Repair Guide: "This gap may cause an upward kink in the neck. And many players feel they lose tone unless firm contact is maintained between the neck and the body."

Dan creates tapered shims that cover the entire heel of the neck—with these ready-made shims, that work is done for you. Attention, repair shops: making a quality shim takes time! Keep these on hand for a quick turnaround on this common repair.

"My Jazzmaster needed a better string break angle over the bridge. The 0.5-degree shim let me raise the bridge to the height I needed. And it fit the neck pocket perfectly."
—Erick Coleman, guitar repairman and StewMac tech advisor

Full contact and precisely tapered: we have 3 different degrees for changing the pitch of any bolt-on neck.
  • 0.25-degree shim offers the most versatility. Stacking them will let you really dial in the neck angle you're after.
  • 0.5-degree shim is the one you'll reach for most often. It works great on Fender and many other solidbodies.
  • 1-degree shim is great for basses with a post mounted bridge.

Taper specs (approximate)
0.25-degree shim tapers from 0.030" to 0.019" (0.76mm to 0.48mm)
0.5-degree shim tapers from 0.028" to 0.008" (0.71mm to 0.20mm)
1-degree shim tapers from 0.060" to 0.010" (1.52mm to 0.25mm)

Dimensions
Shaped: 2-1/2" x 3-7/8" (63.50mm x 98.43mm)
Blank: 2-3/4" x 3-7/8" (69.86mm x 98.43mm)

Shaped shims fit most neck pockets with a rounded heel.

Blank shims were designed for odd screw spacings, smaller neck pockets, and custom designs like the Fender Micro-Tilt™.

The Shop Set of 12 includes one each of every size, shape and taper:
3 shaped shims for guitar
3 shaped for bass
3 blank shims for guitar
3 blank shims for bass

Made of solid maple to match the neck.

Worked a treat

By

Bought a cheap project bass online. With the bridge bottomed and the neck almost straight, the strings sat about 3.2mm off the 12th fret. Bought the 3 pack of shims for some trial and error, tried the 0.5deg one first and it ended up being perfect - I could add a touch of relief in the neck, and it gave me back about 1.5mm of bridge adjustment and now the strings are just under 2mm off the 12th fret. Plays like a dream. Some new pickups and this ting will be a true beast! Just a tip, I got the blank shims as my bass has an irregular neck pocket. I would highly recommend drilling a hole in a piece of wood, and using this to guide the drill when drilling the shim - they are thin and my first hole ended up cracking part of it. Still worked a treat!

StewMac bass neck shim.

I’ve setup bass’s & guitars for five decades. Had previously used various materials & methods for shimming ‘bolt on necks’ (ie: Fenders). Decided to give a try with StewMac’s Fender (recommended) shim on my ‘09 body & 2015 Fender USA P bass. Worked ?? % perfect, recommended without a doubt. Thanks Dale, for your video!!

Shim

Good idea; but was too thick. For a Covid -19 project I made a bass. Currently my bridge is bottomed out and I wanted to bring down the action a little. neck is very straight, so I thought It may work to change the neck angle a little. This was very fine adjustment and the shim changed the angle too severely. I put on a long scale bass, I think the longer the neck the more effect it has? The shims are very fragile, so careful cutting it to size, I had to move holes for my telecaster bass. Used Stewart-Mac yellow lacquer finish made bass ramp, p-bass pickup.

Improved my kit bass by 100%

Got these for a kit jazz bass that I put together. The neck angle had the strings way too high. After adding 2 of the .25 shims and new strings, the action is low and it plays great!

Just what my 5 string needed

After adjusting everything including removing all the relief from my neck and bottoming out the bridge height adjustment, my B string action was still around 8/64ths at the 12th fret. I started with the 1 degree shim and that made things go too far the other direction. Took out the 1 degree and put in the .5 degree, which ended up being perfect. It lowered the string action enough while giving me plenty of headroom for adjustment which I didn't have before. I was able to put a touch of relief back in the neck too. If I had to guess, I'd say the .5 degree shim lowered the action by maybe 6 to 7 64ths and my bridge height is now more in the middle of it's range with my low string action set to about 5.5 - 6 64ths.

Bass neck problem solver.

I have numerous basses and guitars and occasionally you run into a problem with an instrument. I have a bass that I couldn't get the Action and Intonation right. After checking the neck I found it necessary to install a neck shim. I used my feeler gauges and a micrometer to measure the thickness that I needed and ordered the .25, .5 and the 1 degree neck shims. I checked the neck pocket and trimmed the shim to fit the pocket. Re- installed the neck and adjusted the truss rod. Installed new strings and the problem was solved. I will re-order a .25 neck shim just to have it.

The set of 3 neck shims arrived very quickly and make an excellent solution to changing bolt-on neck angles by 1, 1/2, or 1/4 degree.

Works well, easy and fast structural change to a guitar. Shipping is kind of expensive, but still, worth it.

Neck Shims

These shims are the best way to angle the necks on guitars. Leaves no gaps so there is complete resonance neck to body. No warping of the neck will happen.

Outstanding

I rarely take the time to write down a review after a purchase. I have few words to describe how much, these shims have changed my life. I have several old basses with a very difficult action to adjust even after several visits to a luthier. I like to play on basses with a very low action. Thanks to these little shims, I gained half a centimeter of action without any adjustment and now I feel like I'm playing on brand new bass. Absolutely brilliant I recommend a thousand time.
