Fret Slot Depth Gauge

About This Item

Be sure your fretwire will fit! Don't wait until after you've installed a fret to discover the slot wasn't quite deep enough!

Dan Erlewine developed this remarkably handy "look-before-you-leap" gauge for quickly comparing the wire to the slot. Simply hold the flat edge against the fret tang, note the height of the tang against the reference lines, fit the appropriate curved edge into the slot, and compare the lines again.

The gauge is machined from .018" (.46mm) stainless steel for durability in the repair shop, and it fits into any fret slot. It's a big help for refret jobs (it fits bound fingerboards), for setting the depth stop on our adjustable fret slotting saw, and for setting the cutting height of our fret slotting table saw blade. The non-glare etched surface is easy to read, and the curved edges fit all popular radiused and flat fretboards.

Extremely useful for making perfect fret fitment.

My first time doing my own fret job using a newly build sled setup on my table saw with the fretting circular saw blade. What I thought was deep enough turned out to be 0.4mm shy of being the correct depth which would have been disaster. Recut with hand saw and got a perfect job thanks to the depth gauge. It was also handy for cleaning the crud out of the slots before fretting.

What a clever idea

This tiny little device was a brilliant and needed idea. Allows me to cut my notches a little shallower with confidence that the fret will seat fully. It is a really useful addition to my fretting tools

Fret Slot Depth

This is a marvelous tool when hand-cutting fret slots. It allows you to determine if one side or the center is not sufficiently deep for the fret wire being used. Although I only used the flat lines on one edge for a dulcimer, it's easy to see where the curved lines on the other three edges would be of benefit on other instruments.

Wish I would have had this the first time I attempted to build a neck. Had to refret do to improper depth of cut. It makes it so much easier. Get one and save yourself some grief.

Very handy tool

I bought this after having problems with a neck and ended up pulling all the frets. If you want a good fret job you need to know the depth of the slot. I called costumer service after having those problems and they made it right. And as always they have great shipping also. Thank you guys.

Also great for dirty little slots....

This is the best invention since the advent of the wheel. I used to check slot depth with a little bent piece of whatever fret wire I was using but that method is flawed. This tiny tool has saved me more than once from having a fret slot here or where that had maybe not enough depth. It's also great for dredging out any leftover sawdust that your fret slot clean out tool may have missed.

If you’ve ever slotted fretboards before, then you understand that you lose depth after you radius your fretboard. That’s where this little guy comes in handy. You just take a fret saw and re-slot using this little guy as a guide. I Purchased this to help me not have those little unsightly filled slots underneath my fret tangs. Bravo! No brainer purchase!
