Fret/Fingerboard Leveling Files

About This Item

These custom-made files give you a handle on your fret work!

These files work quickly to level frets or fingerboards, leaving a smooth finish.

Each file is 1" wide with a comfortable hardwood handle. The 6" length is for general use, and the 3" length is for spot leveling.

The fret leveling files have single-cut teeth with a steeper angle to eliminate "chatter." They cut faster and smoother than most fret leveling files we've used, they work quickly, and they're great for dressing and beveling fret ends.

The fingerboard leveler is a double-cut file for ebony, rosewood and pearl inlays. Despite its rough appearance, it leaves a smooth finish.

Essential for Fretting
This item is 1 of the 7 tools included in our Essential Fretting Tool Set, a compilation of tools you'll need for the fundamentals of fret work. The set also includes our book, Fret Work Step-By-Step by Erick Coleman with Dan Erlewine.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

Smaller than you think, but it works very well.

Very good quality. It is not very wide, so you have to use a lot of strokes, but it is well made and very sharp. I am sure it will be able to level +50 fretboards before it starts to wear down.

Worked out well, but my be a from a supplier other than the ones pictured

This tool did the job and seemed to do it well, from what my inexperienced hands could tell. But the files itself that I received didn’t have the Stewmac logo burn in and the geometry looked a little different than pictured. But it did perform okay. But when paying the extra for Stewmac it would be nice if they put their name on it.

Works great, be careful!

I had a slight "bump" on the fingerboard where the neck meets the body. A cluster of about three or four frets were slightly too high. This file perfectly lowered that cluster of frets. I anticipated the need to use this file with caution because it can take a lot of metal off your frets very fast. I was right about that, but I didn't have a problem. Use slowly and watch carefully how much you're taking off. But the end result was near perfection!

6" leveling file had sharp burrs on the side

I bought this tool as my first tool for fret leveling. The videos and text made it seem like the most "all purpose" tool for fret leveling and fret edge beveling.

When I received mine, I was disappointed by one usability/ergonomic aspect of the tool: the file seemed to be glued ever so slightly off center from the wood handle, resulting in the sharp file teeth being exposed at the junction of the wood handle to the file on one side. This is something that I could feel when holding the tool, and it was sharp! Initially, I put a piece of masking tape over it to get right to work with my fret leveling job. Later, I took a stone to the sharp teeth on the side, and blunted them to the point of no concern.

The tool is very useful, but I was just a bit disappointed at the QC, and that I had to waste a bit of time correcting a manufacturing error.

Made quick work of the sprouts! Light, even pressure. Go slow, be careful and it works amazing! Also leveled a high(er) fret I found with the rocker. Use the fret finishing kit to get great, smooth fret-ends and frets!

Luthier’s Leveling Dream

By

I bought this fret leveling file to try and make easier work and get better results leveling frets...easily one of the best decisions I’ve made as regards Luthier tools...when I started out I was trying to use hardware store quality files which work well for general purpose filing and found out the hard way not so much for guitar work...I’ve bought a couple of tools from stewmac now and it’s been money well spent...do yourself a favor gang...it might cost a little bit more in the beginning to buy the right tool but it will save you both time and money in the long run. THANKS STEWMAC !!!
