Fret/Fingerboard Leveling Files

About This Item

These custom-made files give you a handle on your fret work!

These files work quickly to level frets or fingerboards, leaving a smooth finish.

Each file is 1" wide with a comfortable hardwood handle. The 6" length is for general use, and the 3" length is for spot leveling.

The fret leveling files have single-cut teeth with a steeper angle to eliminate "chatter." They cut faster and smoother than most fret leveling files we've used, they work quickly, and they're great for dressing and beveling fret ends.

The fingerboard leveler is a double-cut file for ebony, rosewood and pearl inlays. Despite its rough appearance, it leaves a smooth finish.

Essential for Fretting
This item is 1 of the 7 tools included in our Essential Fretting Tool Set, a compilation of tools you'll need for the fundamentals of fret work. The set also includes our book, Fret Work Step-By-Step by Erick Coleman with Dan Erlewine.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire*. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.
*Excludes our original Fret Tang Nippers. We recommend our Deluxe Fret Tang Nippers for stainless-steel fretwire.

Great tool, the grip makes it very easy to use. Stewmac always has the right tool for the job.

Used in conjunction with the 6" fret levelling file to "cure" my parts p-bass of fret sprout, this tool is a MUST is you want nicely rounded fret ends and edges!

If you are trying for the first time, I suggest go slow, with even strokes to start. You'll get the handle on this in no time.

With this and the fret leveling file (and a bit of polishing), I cured my bass of fret sprout in just over an hour!

Awesome ergonomics with the handle too!

A great tool to add to my growing arsenal of goodness!

Ordered this and a fret end file to get rid of the dreaded "fret sprout" that my parts p-bass seemed to have developed after moving back to Canada (instrument was built in Florida, where there's never a chance of "dry weather"!).

So after two winters back, and this winter's "sprout" being much worse than last year's, I knew I had to do something about this issue.

I watched a few StewMac videos on how to do this, ordered the items and went to town on my axe. While not everyone has the ability or patience to do this (I build very small electronic and mechanical assemblies and wiring harnesses for my Day Job), I figured that if I truly screwed it up, at least the instrument would be playable during the later summer months!

Results were better than I could have imagined! After leveling the fret edges to the wood of the neck, I used the end file to round things nicely- no more chewed hands!

Awesomeness!!!

Great File

The 6" file really works well on acoustic frets even when attached to the body. Filing the ends of the frets is easy--just use light pressure to start.

Great Tool

I have to admit up front that I did not buy this tool for its' intended purpose. I am self-taught and years of trial and error have led me to avoid leveling of the full fretboard at all cost. It's not a bad thing in and of itself but just usually isn't necessary with proper prep work (smoothing and leveling fretboard, proper wire radius, etc.). My feelings are that whatever leaves the minimum amount of cleanup and the maximum amount of metal on the newly installed wire is the way to go. Having said that, I became interested after a video in which Dan was showing how to dress fret ends. I had been using a standard flat bastard file to rough in and smooth over the ends of newly installed frets. This was a no-brainer. It is a little on the pricey side for my budget but will pay for itself quickly in the time saved. It should be excellent for fret leveling being very flat (checked it against my straight edge), smooth cutting with little or no chatter, and surprisingly little file marks to clean up afterwards. If you are are into leveling large areas of real estate or to use on fret ends you can't go wrong.

Does the trick!

Living on the West Coast almost all Guitars and Necks I've purchased from the East Coast will eventually get Fret Sprouts or the sharp edges from the end of the Frets. This happens because our air out here is so dry and the wood will ever so slightly shrink. Long story short this file works like a champ! Problem solved, Thanks a Bunch, appreciate the help!

Awesome but one thing to be careful of...

With the single cut version, watch your pressure when you're doing sharp fret ends sticking out, the single cut could make the file ride up onto the tops.

I've been using a questionably precise level and sandpaper for what seems like a decade. I really wanted a level that i can just grab at a moments notice and level. Honestly i don't do a ton of leveling, on average probably one fret level every other year. Its always a pain cutting the sandpaper just right and masking off the level so i can use CA glue to stick down the sandpaper etc etc etc. Currently im working on a telecaster build and i haven't done the nitro finish yet so i haven't been able to use this file for leveling as its intended but i was able to use it to round the fretboard edges and knock off the excess fret material. Worked fantastically and above all else was quick and painless!
