Bridge Pin Hole Slotting Saws + Files

About This Item

Properly seated strings will get the best sound out of your guitar. Prevents bridge plate damage, too. These tools match the slots to the strings.

Seating the strings properly in an acoustic bridge lets the guitar sound its best, helps prevent string breakage, makes string changing easier, and minimizes costly wear on the bridge plate. We're delighted to offer unique new specialty saws and files to help busy repair shops and luthiers do an easier, more professional job.

The Bridge Pin Hole Slotting Saw has been redesigned! It looks simple, but the handmade pull-stroke blade now features legendary Japanese woodworking saw craftsmanship. It's slender to fit the pin hole, and cuts smoothly, efficiently and fast, like no other blade you've used for the task. Blade length 1-3/4" (44.45mm ), overall length 5-1/4" (133.35mm). Available in two gauges, for seating plain and wound strings. Steel blade with traditional bamboo handle.

Our Bridge Pin Hole Slotting Files are uniquely shaped to fit into the pin holes, smooth the saw cuts, and define the string "ramp" at the front of each hole. They're available in five gauges; the smallest (.028"/0.7mm) works for unwound strings. The 3" (76.20mm) cutting edge is rounded, so the string won't bind in the slot. Overall length 5-7/8" (149.23mm). Made of chrome alloy steel.

Our thanks to repairman Gene Imbody and our shop manager Todd Sams for their development work.

We offer other specialty tools for acoustic guitar bridge work, too: see our Endpin Reamer and Bridge Pin Hole Chamfer Tool.

Worked Very Well to Cut Pin Slots

I used to saw to increase the break angle on my high E and B strings. Small slots stopped the sitar buzzing on both strings.

The right tool for the job

I recently bought four of the files. Like a lot of Stew-Mac tools, if you are a home hobbiest and not a pro shop you have to swallow hard at the price and finally click "Buy." And, just like a lot of other Stew-Mac tools, you find they are perfect for the job and makes things so much easier AND neater. You can TRY to do this with assorted needle files, etc., but it's going to be more difficult, take longer, and not come out looking as nice. I have at least 3 guitars I want to slot the bridges on, so I figured these would make a good investment. They have.

I wanted to stop using slotted bridge pins in this tool allows me to do that. It works well.

OK but could be better.

These files work OK but the small file is actually too small for medium gauge strings and the winding on the string catches in the slot. Another problem I had is that the files tend to catch in the slot because the cutting edge is no wider than the edge of the file. They would work smoother if the file shaft was tapered so the edge was slightly wider than the rest of the file.

Slotting Files

I wanted to convert my Martin D-28 S to a slotted bridge so I purchased 0.028" and 0.051" slotting files to do the job. The saws are probably better suited to luthiers that do a lot of work on bridges. The files are slower but if you only have one bridge to do it will probably only take 10 minutes or so. The thinner file is used on the 3 treble strings and the thicker file on the bass strings. The low E may require that file be rotated a little to each side to widen the slot. Be careful not to go too deep before verifying that the slot is wide enough for the string to seat.

I then was able to utilize the unslotted Waverly bone pins which seated with a perfect fit.

Very pleased with the end result and performance of the files. Recommended for any idiot with too many guitars.

Another well made tool from Stew-Mac

I made a bridge pin slotting saw from a fine jig saw blade, but this is a much nicer tool. The files too are well designed and built.

I had been using a piece of coping saw blades for years but found this little saw was far more precise. Good product.

Excellent Tools!

I recently had to shave off a bridge to correct action issues and string/saddle-breakover issues. I used these for ramping some slots into the newly reamed/countersunk bridge pin holes. They worked great!
