Clay Dot

About This Item

Fretboard inlay dots for the early '60s Fender look. Cream-colored Corian® duplicates the distinctive look of old Fender position markers.

They're great for restorations and for making your instrument look more authentic. Reliably consistent 1/4" (6.35mm) diameter, approximately .060" (1.5mm) thick, and ready to inlay. Sold individually.

We also offer matching clay side dots for the edge of the fingerboard.

A little history: Clay position dots were first used by Fender in 1959, with the introduction of rosewood fingerboards on their instruments. Clay dots were discontinued in early 1965 and replaced by slightly larger 9/32" (7.14mm) pearloid dots.

Tip: We recommend epoxy or super glue for installing all our inlays.

Inlay filler colors can be mixed with epoxy for matching ebony and rosewood.

Nice-looking, but wish they were taller

The material looks really nice, and it's a big esthetic improvement over the plastic dots that came in my CIJ Fender neck. They are pretty shallow though, so you might need to get creative if the existing holes are too deep. I'm worried how much I can sand them down when refretting/adjusting radius.

these are great

These have the correct basic color and texture of the clay dots I've seen in 60's fenders (they can easily be darkened with brown aniline dye or brown shoe polish to look older)..I broke one of these up and it is indeed some kind of grainy, ceramic mixture (Corian is stated in the product description) that reasonably resembles the original dots, which were made as the old story goes, from asbestos tiles that were left over when a part of the old Fullerton factory was remodeled. Maybe they could be made to fit a tiny bit better? I don't know. I was able to install l them ok.

Perfect size.

I stained the Pao Ferro on a Telecaster neck. Some stain got on the dots and I'm having a hard time cleaning them up. Drilled out the old dots and replaced them with the clay dots. The neck looks fantastic.

needs to have a better fit

Overall good color and texture, but in the fit department it would be nice to see a taller dot marker to avoid shimming the hole to get a proper fit. How about a slight taper as well .

True to size and color

I found these after being disappointed with the "cream" colored dots I found on another site.
They're off-white (clay is a great name for the color) and not nearly as yellow as the dots sold as "cream", but the best part is they fit exactly in a 1/4" hole. They're very easy to work with and do not look "plastic-y". A great find.

Hard to work with - too thin

By

I had a tough time installing these dots. They are the same diameter as the perloid dots that I had. However, I could not get them to fit properly. They would tap in a an angle. I ended up drilling out the few that I did set and using thicker perloid dots. I am inexperienced and maybe that was the issue.....

Great color

These dots are a very nice color and great for that vintage look. They're a little thin, but it certainly isn't a fatal flaw.

I purchased these to give a new P bass I'm building a vintage look and they work fine and were easy to install.

Wish they were thicker

By

I gave a try to the new clay dots today. The color and material are nice but I wish they were thicker.
They are way too thin to allow proper installation on a standard 60Æs Fender neck and I had to carefully drill both +ö and 3/32ö marker holes very shallow so the dots could be fitted in to allow for flush sanding with the neck.
IÆll be glad to order more in the future if they will be offered thicker.
