I actually got more than I anticipate if this. Each slab was large enough for some inlay work and over I'm very pleased w what I got. If you're wondering how much an ounce is.... it's about 7 good sized chunks.

I've noticed recently that some of the pearl blanks I get have a cut-off or notch left behind by another job. Are we getting some else's left overs? Overall, I am happy with the pearl I get. Uniform thickness, color, and figure.

Very clean MOP!

I order quite a bit of slab shell for my projects. Over the years I have used vendors from all over the world and I can tell you that, as a rule you get what you pay for. Stewart-MacDonald slab shell products are some of the best I have found. It's not the cheapest on the market and believe me when I tell you YOU DON'T WANT THE CHEAP STUFF.

Clean, straight edges for joining when needed.
Smooth surfacing allows for accurate design transfer and engraving of intricate patterns.
Solid, healthy slab pieces, very little chipping or breakage.

You should have no worries ordering shell slab from Stewart-MacDonald.

Pretty

Piece thickness is very consistant. The pieces themselves are lovely. The color from piece to piece is also consistant. Approximately 12 square inches of material in 9 pieces. Seems a little expensive, however I suspect that if I spent a couple of days cutting these from shells, I would think the price is fair. ?

pearl/abalone

Each piece was beautiful, without marks, cracks etc. They were quite easy to cut and shape with a jeweler's saw and disc sander. After finishing, waxing and buffing they displayed a rich patina. This was my first shot at inlaying this type of material and I was delighted with the result. Highly recommended.

My first pearl job

I had never inlayed pearl or abalone. I tried several different techniques, but in general, it was easier than I thought to get started. Like any craft, it takes time and practice... I ordered the figured pearl and green abalone. The pearl was consistent in depth and very pleasing to look at. The abalone was very nice, but with a high degree of variability in quality and coloring piece to piece. This is not a criticism, just and indicator of working with natural materials. If you are going for a specific look, you may need to buy extra abalone to get the piece you want... Also scribing lines into the pearl was easy, while scribing lines into the abalone was more challenging as the high figuration tended to chip in spots when scribing. BTW: the figured pearl makes an excellent truss rod cover! Overall, very pleased with my first go at it...
