Brown Binding Tape

About This Item

Our favorite brown tape is back!
For years we carried "brown tape" and it became a beloved favorite by builders and repair people alike, but after many years the manufacturer ceased its production. Since then, we've been searching the globe trying to find a reliable source for this fantastic tape.

Our "new" brown tape is the same flatback tape with the exact tack, durability, and strength you remember. While it's less "stretchy" than our Orange Multi-Purpose Tape, our Brown Binding Tape is ultra-high tack and ultra tough. You can pull very hard on this tape without breaking, making it perfect for installing wood bindings and other clamping jobs. You can get incredible clamping pressure with this tape!

It's great for fretwork too.
For many, our Brown Binding Tape was also a favorite for fretwork. One application was tough enough to withstand the filing, buffing and polishing involved in most fret jobs and fret level/dress work. The Orange Multi-Purpose Tape is thinner, which is perfect for taping a fretboard when you need to get closer to the base of the fret.

Not sure which tape you need?
We still love and use our Orange Multi-Purpose Tape too. The stretchiness is great for getting into tight spots and getting extra pressure. The lower tack also makes it safer for finishes and easier to remove (but you should never leave any tape on a guitar finish for an extended length of time). It's also great for masking when finishing too.

When using wood binding, the Brown Binding Tape is the right choice for the extra tack and pull you need to hold the rigid wood binding in place. If you are using celluloid or plastic bindings, the Orange Multi-Purpose Tape is the perfect tape to hold the flexible binding strips in place.

New tape sizes for every job.
Our old brown tape only came in one size—now we're thrilled to offer three sizes for any job you have. We have 3/4", 1/2", and 1/4" widths that will let you find the right size for the job.

This is a great tape for protecting a finish during neck or bridge removal (if you are working on a delicate finish, we recommend using our Low Tack Protective Tape first), masking a fretboard for fretwork, and of course installing binding. Get all the tapes and our StewMac Guitar Shop Tape Deck to work like a professional now!

    Ready for any job
  • Tough paper back to stay strong through the job
  • Super high-tack to stay in place
  • Versatile widths to cover any job

Get the tape that works better than you remember!

Pro Tip! The strong adhesive of our Brown Binding Tape is good for applying pressure, but be cautious about using tape on soft top woods like spruce. With soft woods, first stick our binding tape to a cotton t-shirt to give it less tack before applying it.

When binding a guitar, when the glue is dry, remove the tape slowly and gently—pull at a 45 degree angle to the grain and lightly rub it with your index finger. Warming the tape with a blow dryer or softening the adhesive with naptha will also help it lift away easily without pulling up wood fibers. Not recommended for use on vintage or delicate finishes.

#0585 1/2" wide, 60 yard roll (12.7mm x 55m)

First time

It’s my first build. I used the brown tape for my bindings. Then I tried to pull in in more with twill tape.
This tape has good grab and enough strength to pull the bindings tight IMO.
I will order more certainly!

Great binding tape.

Great for only requiring one hand use. You can keep holding your material in place and grab tape to hold it down with the other.

powerful

the most powerful tape I've ever had, so powerful that it pays attention to use on unfinished wood; ex: once the work of gluing the affected part is finished (in case you were installing a binding) be even more careful when you remove it, the glue of the tape is super

Strong, Clean, and Easy

My tape deck collection keeps growing. They work smoothly and this tape for binding is strong enough to hold your work in place, but peels off cleanly and easily.

Great idea!

Having tape in three different widths is a great idea. I wish I had found this sooner.

Good binding tape

Sticks well but not too well where grain can be pulled out. Has some stretch to it to create clamping pressure.

Tough Stuff

Not only worked like a dream on a guitar binding and a flawless resection repair of another, Held a 17' X 1 1/2" X 1/8" thick Walnut table binding without steaming it for the very curved shape
( more curves than a Les Paul double cut) without even straining.

Loved the tape. Perfect for what I needed

Bit thinner than old one? But still better than other masking tapes.

Bought lots of this 10 years ago, ran out recently so trying the "new Brown One."
Strikes me as it's a fraction thinner than the original.
Similar to my picture framing tape in tack and a bit stronger.
Good, but not quite as great as the old one

Great addition to the workbench

I use a lot of tape, and not just for instruments. This gets the rolls off the workbench, and provides ready access -- especially when you need tape in a hurry.

Weighted with foam bottom -- doesn't move at all when taking off tape.

Also, the price for this is very good -- much cheaper than the two-roll models (apparently by the same manufacturer) seen elsewhere.

Note that the cutter is very sharp. Keep the guard up when not in use.
