Mixol Universal Tints

About This Item

The world's most versatile tints
Make any color you want in ANY finish you want.

Traditionally pigments are formulated to combine with nitrocellulose OR waterbase laquers, but Mixol can do both! Mixol tinting pastes are concentrated and finely ground pigments with no binder—meaning they are pure, straight color.

With no binder these pigments readily mix with any finish: nitrocellulose, polyurethane, shellac, waterbased finishes, oil-based lacquers, even fillers and epoxies.

Make any color you can dream
Mixol tints create vibrant solid or translucent colors, no matter what finish you mix them with. They are miscible (mix together readily) with each other—you can create truly any color you want. Mix well for best results.

Unlike a stain, Mixol must be added to something to be used. Because these tints are highly concentrated, a little goes a long way. We've found Mixol mixes well with nearly anything, but always test on scrap before applying. Not recommended to mix with super glues.

Amazing Gold Tint!

I was having the worst time finding metallic tints for my epoxy countertop project, but you guys had some. I got Bronze and Gold to try out. I needed them in a hurry and customer service stepped up to help. FedEx came through and got them to me in time so I could find the recipe I needed for my counters. Ended up using the smaller bottle in a gallon of Allumilite clear cast plus (this was still slightly transparent on the edges but what I wanted). Epic product and great company!

Very Versatile!

I wanted a stain type finish on my PartsCaster project that I did last year, but of course, the only stains you can get at the home improvement stores are just the "run of the mill" kind for general woodworking, even if they come in colors other than the ones that just accent wood grain. I wanted a more orange tinted kind of color, but yet having it pop out the wood grain on the guitar body, which is Roasted Swamp Ash. At a local woodworking store ( StewMac wasn't selling them at the time ) I discovered Mixol Universal Tints, and their capabilities to be mixed in most any medium. For what I termed my "Chili Sauce" finish, I used a small amount of paint thinner, with about three squirts of Mixol Orange ( fellas at StewMac, please include that color! ) and one solid squirt of Mixol yellow. After prepping the body and sanding to 220 grit, then using pre-stain wood conditioner to level the surface and prevent blotching, I applied it with a foam brush in two thin coats and wiped off any excess. But you do have to work with a little speed, especially on a warm day. Also take into account the type of wood you are using, and whether it is open or closed grain for drying time and the visual effect you want. The results were great, but if you use most types of clear finishes, it may have a darkening effect. I used spray on polyurethane, five thin coats, and used 3M Finishing Papers with a StewMac Foam Sanding Block for the rub out, then used automotive glaze for the final polishing. I am overall very satisfied with Mixol, the tints save a lot of headaches for the DIY guitar building enthusiast to get a nice finish that really stands out, especially with highly figured woods. But definitely experiment on scrap that is the same wood or close to the one on your project. You won't waste the tint, and there will be plenty left over to get your project done, it doesn't take a lot.

Subpar

Was really excited to use these as they really do mix with anything from my experience with my recent build. However I would not suggest these for the simple fact it leaves the finish grainy. I triple filtered before going into the gun and a filter inside the gun as well and still got a bunch of grainy bits in the finish. Maybe someone with more experience will have better luck but I would just use something else

Sets up darker

Mixes well with epoxy without slowing hardening time. I had a harder time with getting the color right. It tended to darken as it hardened.

Yellow tint is not compatible with epoxy

By

Although maybe not the primary intended use, I found that the yellow tint turns a dark caramel color when mixed with the two-part clear epoxy I use for inlays. I haven't experimented with other epoxies, but the ColorTone yellow tint for lacquer retains it's bright yellow color in the same epoxy that the Mixol didn't mix with. Also, I probably should have looked closer when I ordered, but these are really small bottles compared to the ColorTone bottles.
