Tortoise Celluloid Binding

About This Item

True vintage-style celluloid nitrate
Natural looking with a warm translucent glow, StewMac celluloid has the vintage quality of the earliest tortoise instrument bindings.

StewMac celluloid bindings are 60" long—two pieces will reach completely around a guitar body.

#5917 extra-tall .565" binding is the right size for Les Paul® and similar guitar tops.

Example binding layout
(see illustration at right)
A  Laminate strips of .010" alternating black and white
B  Combination .020" black and .040" white
C  Use .020" white and .020" black, installed sideways as edge trim

Laminate bindings
You can sandwich strips together using our Binding Laminator and acetone. Measure carefully before you rout the channels, and almost any combination can be installed.

Learn more from our free online article How to Install Bindings:
•  Rout channels
•  Binding joints
•  Shape binding for fingerboards
•  Bind the body and peghead
•  Finishing over binding

For easy binding installation, we recommend StewMac Bind-ALL Guitar Binding Glue.

Binding tape or rubber clamping bands will hold the bindings in place while the glue dries.

Use a scraper blade to trim the glued bindings flush to the surrounding wood.

after reading reviews on the .90 and .60 binding being two dark I ordered .040 and it was still too dark. But instead of whining about it, I EMAILED customer service and the settled the problem to my utmost satisfaction. So if you have a problem , contact them first as the state. GOOD JOB NICK!!!!!!

Doesn’t look like tortoise

I ordered the .060. It is very dark brown with little to no color variation. It just looks like chocolate binding. Very disappointed especially after having to pay the $32 hazmat fee

Pay attention to the picture of the item on the website. I ordered 3 different thicknesses. Both the .60 and .90 are so dark that they just look like dark brown plastic. I shined a strong light both on and in back of them - about 30% show figure. The .020 stuff looks just like normal pick guards and is very nice. Not sure what i am going to do with the thicker materials.... But it looks just like that which is pictured!! I was really hoping it would look like the middle image of the three sizes.
