Black Plastic Binding

About This Item

ABS plastic bindings are used by Gibson, Martin, Taylor, Fender and many other manufacturers. The material adheres well to wood and to itself.

Our ABS plastic bindings are 65" long — a single piece will reach completely around a guitar body. These bindings are manufactured with smooth edges, not rough-sawn from sheets, for closer size tolerances.

#5792 extra-tall .565" binding is the right size for Les Paul® and similar guitar tops.

Example binding layout
(see illustration at right)
A  Laminate strips of .010" alternating black and white
B  Combination .020" black and .040" white
C  Use .020" white and .020" black, installed sideways as edge trim

Laminate bindings
You can sandwich strips together using our Binding Laminator and acetone. Measure carefully before you rout the channels, and almost any combination can be installed.

•  Rout channels
•  Binding joints
•  Shape binding for fingerboards
•  Bind the body and peghead
•  Finishing over binding

For easy binding installation, we recommend StewMac Bind-ALL Guitar Binding Glue.

Binding tape or rubber clamping bands will hold the bindings in place while the glue dries.

Use a scraper blade to trim the glued bindings flush to the surrounding wood.

Trade Secrets!

Trade Secrets!

Coloring new binding to match the old stuff

We've watched Dan Erlewine repair this 1930s Kay over the previous 3 Trade Secrets. It's time to finish it up. Elliot John-Conry of EJC Guitars ages Dan's patch of new plastic binding so it blends in with the old binding around it. About the guitar in this video: This 1930s Kay Deluxe is a fixer-upper that Dan Erlewine repaired in order to sell. Now that it's in great shape again, maybe Dan'll keep it!

Scraping for sharp looking binding: here's how it's done!

The king of Gibson relic finishes: Tom Murphy is well known as Gibson's go-to guy for relic finishes: perfectly worn and age-cracked. Tom's business, Guitar Preservation, makes this a specialty. In this week's Trade Secret he shows us how to make and use a scraper for cleaning binding after spraying a sunburst.

Making a sharp-edged razor file for binding channels

Bad news: the binding on this old Gibson is crumbling to bits.
Worse news:that binding is the only thing holding the body together!
Dan Erlewine's plan is to replace the binding bit-by-bit, so the top doesn't fall off.

By grinding a new edge on a razor file, he creates a tool for cutting crisp square binding channels without a router.

black binding

I haven't used it yet , although I did bind my "single cut junior" kit with the cream binding and it is fab. I cut the back off of a 1966 Augustino classical guitar and used my safety planer to plane off the top of the single cut. Then I glued the Brazilian rosewood to the top. As you can see, it is unfinished but I'm working on it. It will also have a Seymour Duncan Hot Rails in the neck position. I would recommend the binding to anyone.

The best in binding

The binding goes all around the body of the guitar with out joining, like another vendors, and it is smooth. You don’t have to file the edges flat which is ridiculous. If you are laminating bindings this is very helpful that everything is uniform .

Ultimate repair part

I’m making an acoustic guitar. A - D18 to be more specific. I also had to make tools to rout the binding channel. In my haste, I cut the channel a little too deep and this black ABS did the trick!
If you don’t have it.... get it. Shipping was lightening fast!

I used this binding on a handmade guitar for myself. The thicker binding around the top only and the thinner as purfling for the offset soundhole. Also used the thin as frets for a fretless banjo I'm building for our guild contest. Wondrful service

Black Plastic Binding

Purchased this for my Tele build but realized after using the StewMac binding router guide dremel attachment I cut the channel to deep for this particular size binding. However, I went back to StewMac and purchased several other sizes of black plastic binding and was able to match the routing channel I cut. This was my first attempt at routing a binding channel so I did not beat myself up to much. Binding is cheap and good quality with StewMac bind all glue and brown binding tape it worked like a champ and looks near professional grade. I'll be sending images of my Tele which was also purchased from StewMac during a father's day special at a great price.

Worked great. Cut the binding to size (it is a 5 mm channel ) and glued it in place. Looks very nice.

Perfect for an F5 mandolin

By

I have always used a solid piece of white-black-white binding for my mandolins. Mitering the corners was never fun and I would usually have some waste. Luckily I saw a video on line where Tom Ellis of Ellis mandolins used individual pieces to build his bindings. I went to Stewmac and bought the sizes i needed and they were at my shop3 days. Perfect, easy install, used Loctite super glue for awesome, easy results. Thanks Stewmac and Tom Ellis!

Nice and uniform, but not perfectly flat.

I am using this for edge-binding of a fretboard. One face of it quite flat (I used this as the inner face that was bonded to the fretboard). The other face has a slight curvature to it. I measured this as about .062" thick in the center and about .057" at the edges. Something to be aware of when fitting up. It bonded very well with the Bind-All adhesive.

Up here in Canada it's not easy to get tortoise shell celluloid binding . Glues and scrapes nice.
