Worth a look

I did wonder whether this book would be worthwhile as there's a ton of 'how to' videos on Youtube. But there's a lot of interesting background information on materials and techniques which fill in the gaps not covered by the videos. Recommended.

Highly Recommended

I used the specs outlined in this book to get my air compressor and HVLP spray gun setup - I knew to get at least a 30 gallon air compressor in order to paint guitars properly. I know that I would have purchased a more basic air compressor and then regretted it once I realized it wasn't enough to do the job. This book really takes you step-by-step through the finishing process better than anything else I have ever seen. The color samples pages are very cool as well!

Very informative for beginners

By

I have a lot of experience painting and refinishing a wide variety of things including guitars so I didn't really glean very much new information. There was some interesting info on the history of different finishes that doesn't really help much in how to prep your work or apply a finish, but as I said it was interesting. The main thing I wanted was the formulas for the different colors you can produce with lacquer. There was not nearly as much info in that area as I was hoping for. If you want to do a sunburst or something like that they have you covered, but as far as solid colors it was a little limited. For example I was looking for a formula for surf green and there was nothing. The description makes it sound like there is a huge pallet of colors that they give you formulas for. Not nearly as much as I thought there would be.
If you are starting out or have very limited experience in instrument finishing then this book is money well spent. If you have already done a few guitars or other projects you have probably already figured out most of the pitfalls you need to be aware of and can get by without it.

Wish I'd bought this sooner

I have finished several new-build instruments & re-finished or touched up many others. If I'd bought this sooner I could have saved myself some grief in the early days of learning the finishing techniques. This book has it all clearly explained and is an easy read. The stain mixing charts & finishing recipes are fantastic. This is such a brilliant book.

All the help I needed in one book!

I have painted and finished two guitar kits in the last year. I researched on line to find info on how to do the first one. It turned out well, but I had to spend a lot of time putting all the information together for the first one, and I still didn't have all the tricks I needed to get a professional looking finish.
On the second build I bought this book and found all the information I needed in one spot with an index to easily find every tip. It also included tons of info on shortcuts and when to be patient and not try to rush things. It also has tips on fixing mistakes, which I needed more than once.
Well worth the price for us novices.
