Hot Rod Low-profile 2-Way Truss Rod

About This Item

Easy to install in guitars, banjos and basses! Great for thinner necks that need a shallow truss rod depth. These strong, 2-way adjustable rods correct both upbow and backbow.

Used by Martin, Epiphone, Ibanez, Squier, ESP and Godin.

This ingenious dual-rod design fits a straight 1/4"-wide x 3/8"-deep channel (measured from the bottom of the fingerboard). The adjustment nut turns smoothly inside a nickel-plated sleeve, requiring a 4mm Allen wrench (not included). The steel rods are shrink wrapped to prevent rattling.

The low profile means you don't have to remove risky amounts of wood to install this two-way rod. That means there's less chance of cutting into your truss rod channel when shaping a thin neck.

"I've used these rods with great results, in new builds as well as replacements. They’re very strong, and easy to install."
—Erick Coleman, StewMac tech advisor

Had an 81 Gibson Victory Standard with a snapped off rod nut! Tried a Stew,Mac, Truss roe saver, that worked just as advertised! But did not fix the problem. So pulled the board and dropped one of these in. Neck saved,Job done!

Fit perfectly, seems to be a high quality product. I like the fact that it is coated in rubber to stop vibrations.

My Go To Truss Rods but there are issues

By

About 2 years ago I purchased 6 low profile truss rods (black wrap) and used them successfully. Very cost effective. At that time the adjustment key (hex 4mm) was included so I have several spares. I got the installation tool and it is very useful; however, I do have to do a bit of filing to get the right fit. I just bought 6 more low profile truss rods (now red wrap but otherwise identical) and installed 2 with the same issues with the installation tool as before. However, when I used a 4 mm key to adjust as recommended, most of the keys sent with the earlier purchase would not insert. Slightly too big. This was true of all keys (except 1) and all red truss rods. I measured about 6 keys and they measure 4.00 mm. When I used a 5/32 inch key (which is 3.97 mm, it fits perfectly. The newer red covered low profile truss rods require 5/32 inch.

Not For Nut End Adjustment

By

When you see 'low profile' you are thinking great! Because I want it to go into a shallow neck. And you see 1/4' channel for simplicity you think great! I like simple! And then neither are the case.

As it was said by others, the adjustment end (The important end) is way bigger than the rest of the rod. Which takes away 'low profile' immediately. If the adjustment nut and everything was within the 1/4" x 3/8" It would be perfect! That is what we want! But unfortunately no.

This is perfect for adjustment at the back of the neck. Period.

I have both the rods (see picture) for you to see visually. The regular one measured at the adjustment nut is 11.34 mm x 6.35 mm. This low profile one at the adjustment nut is 10.86 mm x 9.20 mm. So in height, only 0.48 mm diff. Why is it called low profile?? And it is wider! So more wood loss.

I would say the regular one is better for nut end adjustment. Because it isn't as wide. Any wood saved is better. Or, maybe find one made elsewhere that is made better to be truly low profile.

I may look around elsewhere just to see, and only use this one as an absolute last resort.

The backbone of my EUB!

By

I bought the 24 inch low profile truss rod last year when I was making my electric upright bass. I got great advice from StewMac on correct installation and it was easy to do when I came to that step. I finished the bass in April this year and am learning how to play it now. The truss rod came into its own when I was fine tuning the fingerboard and neck to play the strings without them buzzing. Between my card scraper and the truss rod, I got it right. Very pleased with StewMac staff and their fine products.

Love the 1/4 inch dado width

By

Verified Buyer

This truss rod is only 1/16 " lower than the previous hot rod I was using but the 1/4 " width is marvelous. Easier access to router bits and not as fragile as the 7/32" bits.
I have installed 2 with the adjusting nut at the head stock end with one router fence set up and a 1/4 and a 3/8 spiral dado bit.
I was not happy that FedEx lost or stole the first shipment and really did nothing for me. Fortunately Stewmac shipped me 3 more at no cost to ship. Now fighting with FedEx over additional border brokerage fees.

This is a replacement for a broken Hot Rod. The broken one had a failure at the weld to the threads.

Terrific value for money. I use these on all my builds, 4 and 8 string basses, 6 and 12 string guitars, both acoustic and electric.

They are easy to install and they do the job!
