Unbleached Bone Nuts

Unbleached Bone Nuts

Stewart-MacDonald is your source for quality bone!
Bone is traditionally favored for quality instruments. Our unbleached bone is even harder than bleached white bone, and has a mottled cream vintage look. Its hardness and density contributes to good tone, it polishes well, and it allows more precise slot filing.

Blank nuts have oversize length and height, for custom shaping in your shop. They're ready for trimming, filing, sanding and slotting.

Preshaped nuts will save you a LOT of work — a head start for the novice builder, and a bonus for the busy repair shop where time is money! The dimensions have been carefully researched, and minor trimming, slotting, and sanding are all that's needed to fit most popular guitars.

Love these. Look beautiful polished up, easy to shape, great tone, and the pre-shaped blanks eliminate the need for saws and belt-sanders to get you in the ballpark.

Greasy is good?

By

Don't know if it's just me, or does the string seem to slide easier through these unbleached bone nuts?
I notice when using a linisher to shape the blanks, that they exude a slippery liquid when warm. I'm assuming this is some sort of fat left in the bone when unbleached.
Bleached bone seems very dry in comparison, as do many other nut materials.
I haven't fitted one of these yet, that hasn't improved tuning ability over any other material I've tried.

Bad to the Bone!

By

After only 2-3 passes on 320 grit sandpaper, the nut fit snugly on my Strat. It took a little more sanding to match the profile of the original nut. The pre-slotting made it easier to fine tune the nut action using nut files. A little polishing and it was done. In my opinion, bone does improve tone and sustain with open strings.
