Slotted Unbleached Bone Nut

“Starting with one of these slotted nuts saves me about an hour per job. And they're unbleached bone, my favorite for tone.”
—Erick Coleman, StewMac tech advisor

Stewart-MacDonald is your source for quality bone!
You already know bone nuts sound better than plastic. Good news: our vintage-look unbleached bone nuts are now available pre-slotted! It's easier than ever to install a perfect, super-hard nut. That's a huge time savings—especially in professional repair shops.

The slots are proportionally-spaced, using the same method as our String Spacing Rule. This means the strings feel right all across the neck—no crowding on the heavier bass strings.

These beautifully shaped nuts are StewMac exclusives, with research and design by our repair experts. Final fitting is all you'll need to do.

The slots could have been cut a little deeper

By

I bought this because I didn't want to invest in slot files but I'm going to have to buy at least one because the slots in the bone nut I bought are barely discernible and I'm afraid they will not hold the strings in place.

A Good Nut

By

The measuring guide was very useful. In my case the guitar model did not match any nut by brand, and I matched one of the Gibson nuts to a Fender Starcaster acoustic, all by printing and using the PDF guide. It was not a perfect fit (headstock groove slightly wider than the nut), but OK for this old cheap guitar.
When sanding the bottom of the nut to lower string height, as the nut warmed on the belt sander it "sweated" and smelled like, well, like these things smell. So IMHO the nut maybe could have been dried out more, but I really don't care.
The guitar sounded better to me!
Good nut.

Slotted Unbleached bone nut

The bone is quality. I had a spare tusq nut handy but wanted to try the bone nut on my Martin D1. The tusq nut width replacement slid right into slot but I had to sand the bone nut just a little to fit into slot. I also, of course, sanded to fit the height also My Martin just rings now nice and clear. Very Satisfied.

Fit like a glove

By

I ordered the 6012-VS. it fit my “outside” guitar, Eterna, perfectly. My luthier skills are limited to changing strings but I will try my hand at rounding the edges a bit.
Thanks StewMac
Next up is replacing the nut on a Yamaha acoustic/electric 12 string.

The break was close to the lettering and it went down the neck , I needed the part because it was missing , I had to rebreak the neck and repair , the coustomer said it looked like it came from the Factory, thank you Guy's

Did some surgery on a Chibson and this nut made a world of difference in the tuning stability, intonation, and resonance. Will certainly keep in mind for future projects.

Mixed results

I've gotten two of these. The first was for a SG and that one worked great. After sanding and shaping it for the guitar, the guitar sounds great. The second one I got was for a telecaster with a curved bottom and the string spacing was not the same as the one from Fender. I shaped and sanded it for the guitar but it ended up not working out. It killed the sound and feel of the guitar. I ended up making a new nut from a bone blank for the guitar and it sounds great. Part of the issue was string spacing but part was the front to back angle of the nut at the top was pretty significant. I spent a lot of time trying to make it work, about as much as making the new nut, and short of filling the slots and re-cutting the nut there was no saving it.

Best replacement for Stratocaster

By

Verified Buyer

This nut is the best replacement.
I’ve used tusq nuts but there’s too much work with those.
You’ll have to sand down the thickness and correct radius. If you don’t take your time it’ll be uneven.
This nut has the exact measurements you’ll need for both thickness 1/8” and radius.
All that’s left to do is string height.

A perfect fit for a hard-to-find bone nut.

I've got a 1940s Martin 00-17 that needed a new "slanted bottom" head nut. Found a few that "almost fit" correctly... but then checked Stew-Mac and got one that fit perfectly. A little expensive, but well worth it. Sounds great.
