Double-stick Tape

About This Item

Clear polyester tape with adhesive on both sides, for holding router templates and attaching acoustic guitar pickguards.

How to use it: our Double-stick Tape has two different adhesive strengths. A light tack (template side) and a heavy tack (body side). The light tack is on the side of the tape that you peel the white paper backing off of. For normal application, cut pieces of tape to the desired size and attach it to the workpiece to be routed.

Be sure to use enough tape to cover as much of the underside surface of the template as possible. Press the tape to the workpiece firmly before removing the backing. Peel the white paper backing off of the tape and line up the template. Apply very heavy pressure to secure the template to the workpiece before routing.

2" wide x 108 feet (50mm wide x 33 meters long).

Another good double stick tape option

By

I found several online sources for double-stick tapes that appeared similar to Stewmacs. I use a lot of tape for woodworking other than luthiery. They were cheaper so I gave one a try. It works as well as Stewmacs but the critical difference is thickness. The Stewmac clear double stick is significantly thinner. I like to use it for holding smaller material and now save the thicker type for holding larger parts for other woodworking applications. I also keep a roll of Scotch double stick tape on hand when I don't need the aggressive adhesive of the larger tapes. That very sticky adhesive is the reason I give this product (and the cheaper ones as well) four stars. When I remove parts that have been attached to a pattern, for example, the adhesive is just about evenly spread on both and must be removed either with heavy sanding or a solvent. Otherwise this is great tape.

Worth every penny.

Good and strong. Quick tip, for difficult pieces I like to put the taped pieces in a tight clamp for about 5-10 minutes for an extra strong bond before working the piece. The pressure time enables a stronger bond over just pressing them together by hand :)

ordinarily I don't use these products

I have found that most of the double sided tapes will let you down occasionally. This one however is superior in holding strength and easy peel.

Should be recalled

I thought I was buying the good old 3M tape. Nope. This has an entirely different adhesive. If you stick it to a lacquered surface, when you pull it off most of the adhesive remains and is a pain to clean up. It's almost like product-sticker gunk that you use Goof-Off to clean up. Fortunately, a lot of rubbing with mineral spirits eventually got it all off, I hope.

Not as good as the 3m brand

Earlier this year I had my pal acquire me this tape since he was already placing an order for his. Prior to this order, I could not find a better double-sided tape. So I used up the new roll over a period of a few months and noticed it wasn’t sticking as effectively as I once knew. Simply cutting the tape with a razor would cause the tape to get crinkled rendering it useless. I thought it was a bad roll, but the more I used it the more I was wondering if this was the same tape I had fallen in love with prior. My pal said he had problems with his too. I stumbled upon recent reviews and realized I wasn’t going crazy. This particular 3M brand of double-sided tape is no longer available. I contacted 3M and they did not have a source to anyone else selling it.

3M is the probably best adhesive tape company in the world. Stewmac’s current double-sided tape is not the worst, but it requires too much fuss and do-overs. I decided to source my double-sided tape needs to a luthier supplier in Philadelphia. The tape I currently use is very good and reliable. The only drawback is it’s not clear. I really miss Stewmac’s 3M double-sided tape.

You can’t win them all, but I still use Stewmac for 90% of my tool and supply needs.

Awful stuff!!!

The old 3m tape was awesome. The new tape they changed to doesn’t stick to wood very well. It sticks to metal templates such as the fret slot template and won’t come off with out heat and solvent. What a waste of time cleaning it off every time you use a metal template. I really wish they would switch back to the 3m tape.

Has failed several times

Sometimes this tape works really well, but using it with porous woods or MDF, it doesn't adhere nearly as well as it needs to. I ruined a neck because of the tapes poor adhesion. As some other reviewers have said, the 3M Double Stick Tape is preferred because it actually works the way it should. Overall, it works well on certain surfaces, but I will stick (no pun intended) with the 3M tape.

Not sticky like the 3M product Stew Mac used to sell

I am used to using the 3M double stick tape which is wonderful. The Stew Mac version is not as adhesive. It works well on plastics or smooth finished surfaces but some of my templates are MDF or wood and it does adhere to these very well.

That last think you want to do is spend money on something that isn't going to work or help speed up the process. I finally splurged and bought the DS Tape for sticking my templates to guitars and it holds so well and could not be easier to remove and clean up. I was shock, how much grip it had then how easily it was removed.
