ColorTone Black Aerosol Guitar Lacquer

About This Item

The easiest way to spray a professional finish!
Produces a beautiful traditional nitrocellulose lacquer finish, without elaborate spray equipment.

Black Gloss is a deep opaque black, exactly what you want for a solid black peghead. Top it off with Clear Lacquer for a deep, sleek gloss.

Sunburst Black is semi-opaque to transparent. This black has a warm hue, just right for the outer edge shading of a sunburst finish.

ColorTone® Aerosol Guitar Lacquer is formulated especially for musical instruments. Fast-drying and resistant to alcohol and water, it produces a hard, durable finish. Add clear coats of ColorTone Clear Lacquer for a deep, sleek gloss. Convenient 13-ounce spray can.

ColorTone Lacquer can be sprayed over smooth unfinished wood; over sanded basecoats of grain filler, and over ColorTone nitrocellulose Sanding Sealer. It's ideal for touch-up work, or for an entire instrument. The rotating-tip nozzle can spray a horizontal or vertical pattern.

Aerosol spraying is an economical way for the beginner to apply a finish. Aerosols produce a slightly rougher surface than spray guns however, and more sanding of the clear topcoats may be needed for a level finished surface.

Application Tips: We recommend spraying multiple thin coats, in a low humidity environment. Heavy-bodied Sanding Sealer (one coat equals two coats of lacquer) will seal the wood before the black coats are applied. Spray only enough black to hide the wood; most of the final finish thickness should be sprayed with clear gloss topcoats.

Use warm lacquer, not cold!
Pro shops spray heated lacquer because cold lacquer spatters, requiring extra sanding. You should warm up your aerosol lacquer too, simply soak them in a sink of warm tap water.

Our ColorTone Aerosol Finishing Kit is a great choice for the first-time instrument maker. It includes our easy-to-apply clear gloss aerosol finish with the best instruction book available!

I wish I could post 2 photos so you could see what I started with, but here's what the product did for this 1929 Dobro. It's not perfect, my first effort, but my Uncle that gave it to me was pleased. Thanks, StewMac, for a great product and tremendous service.

Used for headstock of LPJ over vinyl sealer. First time using aerosol cans and it went on just fine, no issues. I’d recommend these for their convenience.

GREAT PRODUCT

I used to use a spray gun and compressor setup. Did my last guitar with this black and it came out great. Just make sure you do a couple things. 1.) Do yourself a favor and get the upgraded spray nozzles 2.) Make sure before use you soak the can in hot water for no less than about 30 mins. You will get a better quality spray.

Good stuff

Good coverage, good solid content, easy to spray without runs with light coats. Easy to apply light coats. This IS NOT krylon... if you know what I mean. The only thing better is a dedicated spray gun.

I recommend it.

Black lacquer finish

By

My first attempt. A Gibson L00 that had seen some pretty bad prior repair work. I bought as a project. Needed refinishing after I removed some sort of poly finish. I went with black because Gibson had used that and I wanted to cover old damage. Worked far better than I had right to expect. Followed directions and shot 3 color coats. Finished with 4 clear. Even finish. Good color. Some sanding needed but not excessive. I’ll use this again.

Spray On Nitro

My complete lack of experience in this left me full of doubt. I wanted to touch up a headstock repair on a Les Paul and thought I'd try it myself before submitting the guitar to a professional. Following the directions and NOT getting into a hurry I made it happen! The repair looks much better and is now not detectable when playing. You can obviously still see it, but not feel it. Doubters - go forth and lacquer!
